Review: Dead as a Doornail by Charlaine Harris

Dead as a Doornail opens with shifter community on red alert. There is a sniper in Bon Temps and the shifters are the target. So far, there’s been 2 wounded (Sam Merlotte and Calvin Norris) and 1 casualty (a young shifter girl). Sookie was present when Sam was shot and when Sam realizes that his wounded leg means Merlotte’s needs extra help, he send Sookie to Eric Northman for help. Eric is willing to help but continues to badger Sookie about what exactly happened while under the witches spell as he still does not remember it. Fearing the amount of control Eric would have over her if she let him know everything that happened, she is resolved to keeping her lips sealed. Sookie returns from Fangtasia with a vampire bartender who is an honest-to-goodness pirate, eye patch and all. As our little telepath is trying to unravel the sniper mystery, she ends up in her own bucket of trouble – there’s a private detective haunting the town investigating the disappearance of Debbie Pelt and someone appears to be targeting Sookie for a totally different reason.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. The issue that I have with this book is up until now, every one that I have read has been a page burner. Although the story in Dead as a Doornail moves steadily, it is slow and steady. I also found myself getting incredibly frustrated with everything that Sookie was going through. It was a never-ending flow of one bad thing after another for her. I mean, does she EVER catch a break??? However, on the good side of it, by the time you reach the end of the book, every one of the twists and turns in this book actually prove to be a nicely woven story line. Everything that happens – it happens for a reason and Sookie is better for it for the most part.

My favorite part of this book? Although it takes forever to get there, this book opens up a few doors for Sookie and I can not wait to see what happens when she goes through them. Ladies – John Quinn. That’s all I’m saying! 😉 Overall rating is 3.5 stars.
