REVIEW by Jena: At Grave’s End (Night Huntress Series #3) by Jeaniene Frost (@Jeaniene_Frost)

As if that wasn’t enough, a woman from Bones’ past is determined to bury him once and for all. Caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful vamp, yet determined to help Bones stop a lethal magic from being unleashed, Cat’s about to learn the true meaning of bad blood. And the tricks she’s learned as a special agent won’t help her. She will need to fully embrace her  vampire instincts in order to save herself — and Bones — from a fate worse than the grave.

Once again, Jeaniene Frost doesn’t disappoint! 

This book was a fantastic addition to the series.  We get to see more of the same ass kicking good time that is Cat’s job but we get to see a whole lot more.  We get to learn more of the ins and outs of the vamp world that Bones is in and what that all means.  At Grave’s End gives the reader a better understanding of what it means to be a master of a line.  We see a much different side of Bones in this novel and it’s given me an entirely new appreciation for him as a character.  I loved him to pieces as it was but this book made me see him a totally new light. 

The characters in this book continue to grow exponentially with each installment, this one being no exception.  Cat and Bones are still a perfect couple in my eyes.  Cat’s team are more and more faithful to her by the day and their view of her as their leader and the dedication that they show is admirable.  We also learn more about Bones’s friends in this installment and I have a few favorites now – Charles (Spade – who I already loved because of First Drop of Crimson – click here to read my review), Vlad (who is actually getting his own series with the first installment, Once Burned, coming in June – click here to learn more), Ian (who I HATED in the last book with good reason) and Rodney.  I even have a greater appreciation for Cat’s mom, Justina, because of this book!  She was a raging bitch in the previous installments but she takes a turn for the bad ass in this installment.  However, I still don’t like Tate.  Never have, probably never will.  On that note though, I am in comedy heaven with Juan.  He kind of reminds me of Barney from the show How I Met Your Mother.  Yeah, Barney with a Spanish accent.  He’s a dog who regularly thinks with the completely wrong head but he’s hilarious.  By the end of this book, he just gets funnier. 

I want to warn all you estrogen laden readers out there that At Grave’s End will make you cry.  At least twice.  I don’t cry easily and when these events happen, I was listening to the audio book at my desk and got so choked up that I had to sneakily wipe my eyes with a napkin so my co-workers wouldn’t think a family member had died.  There’s a HORRIBLE event that happens in this book that will wrench your heart out of your chest, stomp it into a million pieces and then try to stuff it back in.  It’s awful.  Even now it makes me sigh.  I assure you though, there’s a reason for every event that happens in a Jeaniene Frost novel.  Nothing is without it’s cause and effect. 

The Big Bad in this book will also surprise you in this book.  He or She (not giving it away because that would be a big spoiler) is RUTHLESS to no end.  You will hate him/her.  A lot. 

I also want to mention the narrator again.  I have mentioned her in past reviews for this series but she deserves a world of credit I couldn’t possibly give her.  Her name is Tavia Gilbert.  She’s AMAZING.  Probably the most talented vocal actor I have ever had the pleasure of listening to and I listen to a LOT of audio books.  She’s got a different voice/accent for every single character that graces the pages of this book and she never once falters.  I love listening to her read the books so much that I have found that I actually prefer the audio book to reading the books myself.  I read most of One Foot in the Grave (book 2) as a Kindle book and even then, I would hear Tavia’s characters in my head.  She’s wonderful and really deserves some recognition.  And my hat is off to the author or publisher (who ever chose her for the reading) because they did the smart thing and have had her read all of the books in this series.  She’s so good that after meeting Bones in the Night Huntress World series (which I read before the Night Huntress Series), I knew his voice as soon as the character was introduced in Halfway to the Grave (book 1).  She’s just chock full o’ awesomeness and I hope she continues on with this series to the end. 

Overall, I give At Grave’s End 5 stars!  I don’t know that I have ever given an entire series 5 stars from beginning to end so this may be a first for me.  I hope the rest of the books in this series are as good as the first 3 were! 

I have listed the books below with links to buy them in a number of formats.  I strongly encourage anyone who likes urban fantasy and vampire books to check them out.  You will love them!  I have yet to talk with anyone that has read this series who did not like them so it’s not just me and my addiction to vamp fiction.  I am super excited about Vlad’s spin off coming next month.  He’s a great character and I cant wait to see where that series takes him.
