Chloe Masters’s world changes in a heartbeat and all she did was touch a doorknob.

Illusions are part of Chloe’s everyday life, her father being a renowned magician, but how do you make sense of traveling through dimensions with the touch of a doorknob? There’s much for her to learn at the Paladin Academy, a school for her kind. What her kind is she would like to know.

And who better to teach her then some of the characters that go there and belong to the various Societies. She makes a select group of friends and she soon learns just how much she doesn’t know about her family and about herself.

She turns to her new friends for help when her dad disappears but she also must ask for help from a student at the Academy who is anything but a friend. He’s irritating and some say dangerous but she has no choice, she must get James Nightshade to help her. He agrees, but there’s a price to pay and she realizes too late how much it will cost her.

Okay, if you follow me on Goodreads you know it took me forever to finish this book. It’s not the story’s fault, not in any way. I’ve been trying to stay more active, reading and watching television less, and it’s been hard for me to focus on any kind of a book.

So, now that the boring personal stuff is out of the way, I’m going to let you all know, right off the bat, that I love this book. Chloe is my kind of gal: Mouthy, spunky, and rolls with her new powers like a good superhero. Chloe’s also a typical teenager about love, obsessing about boys. Well two boys. Boys is not the best word for Nightshade and Slade. They are both a couple of red hot chili peppers, and I don’t blame Chloe a bit for being confused.

My other favorite character in this book is Chloe’s cousin Jess. Talk about two characters cut from the same bolt of cloth! The relationship between these two cousins fascinates me, because the reader is able to see the evolution of their relationship as the story progresses.

Chloe starts learning more about her powers, and her family’s story, when she goes to the Paladin Academy, introducing a new set of characters, and challenges for Chloe. Like what’s the group The New Kind up to?

The dialogue in The Doorknob Society keeps the story moving along nicely. There’s lots of danger, also, as Chloe and her friends try to stop the wave of violence generated by The New Kind.

I only have one criticism of The Doorknob Society–there are many spelling and grammatical errors, and I’m hoping that book two, The Impossible Engineers, has fewer of these errors. But these errors did not detract from my enjoyment of The Doorknob Society, and I’m giving the story 4.5 stars. I want to know more about this society, about Chloe and Jess, Slade and Nightshade, and what happened to Chloe’s mother.
