Double Click is the sequel to Click and I did read Click about a year ago. It was long enough ago that while I still remember it because it was so different, I had forgotten a lot of it. I have to say, it took only a few pages and I was right back in it. The reason it was different was because it was told in email form. This time, the emails are between the main character of Renee Greene, her boyfriend Ethan and her best friend Shelley. In addition, there are three others( all friends) that are part of the email banter.
What I liked about this book :
It was amazing to me how drawn into the story you can be by reading emails. The banter between Renee and Shelley was the best part of the story. They are the best of friends and no matter what happens, they have each other’s back. At some points all of the characters were shooting emails back and forth, sometimes all talking about the same subject, other times, making fun of different things and using puns to do it. Most of the puns were really humorous. The emails ranged from as short as just a smiley face or one word to longer ones that were page long ones.
I enjoyed the characters, particularly Renee and Shelley. The kind of friendship these two have together was what all friends should aspire to. The author manages to really flesh out the characters only by using emails and I am sure that wasn’t easy. I can only say that at the end, I felt I knew them all really well. I did miss Shelley’s promiscous tales and the nicknames she had for her many different dates from the first book. There was a lot of humor to be had from those sometimes hilarious stories. There is a reason for this but I will let the reader find this out!
What I didn’t like about this book:
The premise. The first book had a very specific premise- Renee and her friend Mark decided to brave the world of dating services. That kept the story moving in some pretty interesting ways. This time I couldn’t tell you actually what the main premise is exactly. It pretty much was just a group of friends talking back and forth, and along the way, some major life events happen. Don’t get me wrong, I actually enjoyed catching up with characters but just kept wondering to myself how I would explain the plot.
That being said, I did enjoy the book. It was an extremely fast read and it does keep your attention. There really wasn’t any boring parts and was actually a fun read. At it’s heart, it’s a story about friendships and people that really care about each other. I would recommend it to people that read the first book and people that enjoy stories with humor and witty banter. I would suggest that you read the first book, as it is the background to most of what happens in this book.
