Peyton Clark has just inherited a house in the Garden District of New Orleans. Since she has just gotten divorced from her super controlling husband, this is her chance to actually have her own life. The house however, is a mess. She hires contractor Ryan Kelly to handle it. It’s not long before she realizes that the house is haunted by a former police detective, Drake, that lived in the house back in 1918. Back then the city had been terrorized by an ax murderer that was never caught. Peyton becomes immersed in all the information she can find on the ax murders. She also gets immersed in Ryan and meets Drake in her dreams. And oh yes, the ax murderer starts taking notice of Peyton too.
What I liked about this book:
The romance was really sweet between Ryan and Peyton and actually between Drake and Peyton. Of course since Drake is dead that’s kind of a moot point. And while we are talking about Drake-I just love a good ghost story as long as the ghost isn’t malevolent. Drake was very flirty for a ghost and I found myself wishing he wasn’t dead.
I liked the setting of the story. The Garden District of New Orleans is particularly beautiful and I have first hand knowledge because I have stayed there. It’s always fun to read a book about somewhere that you are familiar with. To me books about New Orleans usually becomes all about the people, flavors and sights of the city and is a perfect setting for a haunted house.
I enjoyed getting scared by the story at least a couple of times. I think there could have been some more spooky parts since it was about a haunted house and an ax murderer that’s still around. This is a series so perhaps there will be more of this is the next book.
What I didn’t like about the book:
For a ghost story it was pretty tame. I think there could be a bit more of a haunting going on in the story. Since it is a really old house, maybe more then a couple of ghosts could be hanging around. Maybe in another book, at least hopefully.
The only other thing that bothered me was the character of Drake. I realize he was French, but he would say a sentence in French and then translate to English so many times that it got really tiresome. I know it was important to the story for her to realize he was real-because since she didn’t speak French, the fact he translated proved he really was there. It just seems there could have been a better way after awhile.
Who would I recommend this book to:
Readers that like a fairly tame ghost story with no gore. Actually, it could almost be considered a older Young Adult read. At least that was my take on it.
I know it’s a series, but I don’t feel compelled to read the next one, although I know there will be a huge audience for this one.
