Frustrated when none of the real newspapers will hire her as a reporter, Eliza Bradley takes the only job she can get–at a paranormal magazine. Her first assignment takes her to Fairbanks, Alaska to investigate the rumors that a werewolf has killed two local men.
When she meets Hunter McCall, a local college professor and an expert on wolves, she finds herself irresistibly drawn to him and ends up spending more time in his bed than worrying about werewolves. That’s when Eliza finds out Hunter isn’t just an animal in the sack, he’s an animal out of it, too–of the werewolf variety. Talk about a complicated relationship.
But Eliza can’t dwell on Hunter’s little shapeshifting issues for long. There’s another werewolf out there with a taste for human blood, and she and Hunter are the only ones who can stop him. If they don’t, they’re likely to become his next victims.
Love a good shifter book? A good mystery with action? A good romance, with good characters? That’s what you get when you read this book. I enjoyed the book, except for one aspect which I will talk about farther down in the review.
What I liked about this book
The premise of a reporter from a paranormal magazine(sent to prove if werewolves exist), falling for a werewolf, was pretty interesting. I love a good shifter, love story, and this was a pretty good one. I loved the mystery of the rogue shifter killing people.There’s lots of action and suspense in that part of the story which I really enjoyed. I loved the characters of Eliza and Hunter and their romance, even if it was pretty much insta-love. I would have liked a bit more world building as it pertained to the insta-love aspect. Was it a mate thing? I still don’t know and actually Hunter wondered the same thing. And while I am on the subject of Hunter, I really liked what a good guy he is in this story. The author didn’t make him have a temper or blackouts or any number of things I have read in other books about werewolves, and I liked that! It also hurt a lot when he shifted. I think a pack would have added to the story as well-it just was another and different aspect of the world building, in that Hunter lives alone, with no pack around him. And that isn’t a complaint.
What I didn’t like about this book
I was really excited to get this book from Net Galley for review. However, I ended up wishing that it had been mentioned that this was pretty much erotica, along with a really good story. I am not a fan of erotica, and I would not have requested the book had I known. Not the authors fault at all. I don’t mind a good sex scene(or several) and actually expect them; this book just crossed into the erotica arena a bit for me. BUT, I did really love the story itself, so I just skimmed through the sex scenes after awhile, and that was fine.
Who would I recommend this book to?
Any adult that likes shifter or paranormal stories that feature erotica elements.
Actually, I really liked the premise, the romance, the characters, the mystery, just about everything about this book. I can live with the erotica element, because I really enjoyed the rest of the read.
