Nothing is what it seems in a glittering new fantasy by best-selling author Sarah Wynde
Fen’s life is on track—she works, she studies, she pays her rent—until a gorgeous guy points a gun at her and demands that she choose how she wants to die. What the hell? When a teenage boy, Luke, comes to her rescue, she survives, but escape won’t be so easy.
Luke’s sexy older brother, Kaio, offers to help her, but his protection simmers with unnerving undercurrents. The brothers have secrets and Fen has questions. Who are they? How did they find her? And why was she targeted for murder in the first place?
When Fen and Luke are forced to run for their lives, Luke spirits Fen away to an enchanting underwater city. But every enchantment has its dark edges. Caught in tides of romance, fear, and a plot to destroy humanity, Fen must look deep within herself to find the strength and courage she’ll need to stay afloat in an amazing new world.

Warning: Fen swears. A lot. If you object to the f-word, her story might not be for you.
This is one of “those books”, the ones you get, start, don’t put down, and then wish you hadn’t finished it already. I really can’t say enough good about this story and writing. I found this to be a wonderful adventure, and a fantasy that part of me wished was real-well parts of it anyway. I love when a book takes me away to another world(as long as it’s not too weird) and this one did that.
What I loved about this book:
Fen is a street wise, twenty one year old, that finds herself in the middle of a mess when she has to make a decision of how she wants to die. She is saved by a young man(Luke) that gets hurt instead of her. The fact that the man’s wound has green blood coming from it, is just the first of the really strange, sometimes scary, and at times, wonderful life that Fen now finds herself involved in..
The world building was incredible. The under the sea world this author created was fascinating. It was so descriptive, that I could perfectly picture the city and it’s inhabitants. The different groups or factions involved, and the threats of war were explained in such a way that it seemed just a part of the story, not necessarily an info dump or anything.
Fen’s character was equally engaging and snarky-always good news in a book, in my opinion. She has a smart mouth, and an equally bad potty mouth, so this is not a YA book, although it certainly reads like one at times. Luke was a sweetheart, looked about 16, but in reality was much older, and I thought he was one of the best characters in the book, aside from Fen. Luke’s older brother(by a couple of hundred years), Kaio, was the epitome of a handsome, billionaire bachelor, who runs a huge company on land, but is also the queen’s favorite grandson, under the sea. Their even older sister, Gaelith, was a delight as a magical healer, that takes Fen under her wing. Of course the book has bad guys, and had them in spades-also, very well imagined by the author.
And last, but definitely not least, it was NOT about mermaids! Not that I hate mermaids, but actually I have only ever liked one mermaid book, so I was happy I didn’t have to deal with that kind of premise.
What didn’t I like about this book:
At times, I thought Fen acted a lot younger then her age, and sometimes her conversations reflected that. I read a lot of YA, and she would fit right in, in any of them, if not for her bad language and her thinking about sex(not doing, just thinking). Not a big complaint though.
The only other problem I had was her wishy-washy feelings towards the two brothers-she likes them both romantically, but goes back and forth on her feelings for both. Love triangle? I don’t know yet.
Who would I recommend this book to?
Science fiction and fantasy fans, ages 17 plus, would be my thought.
I really did enjoy the read and I will be reading the next one as soon as it comes out. The world was refreshingly different, and the story was quite the adventure. All in all, a really fun read, with great fully realized characters.
