I’ve said it before, and I will say it again, I want to live in this author’s mind for about an hour, and just see how her imagination works. Ms. Bartol has created a whole new world, and while I don’t want to live there, I sure can appreciate what it took to come up with such a fantastic premise for a series. If you plan on reading the first book in this series, there are major spoilers coming up.
Under Different Stars introduced us to Kricket, a seventeen year old girl living in Chicago and just trying to ride out the few months until she’s legal. She’s a runaway from the foster care system, and has carved out a life of sorts for herself. That is, until she realizes she is being hunted by two different factions. Since she has the gift of being able to tell if someone is not being truthful, she knows that one of the groups are being deceptive with her. Still she does try to keep from being kidnapped. Of course she is taken, and she ends up on another planet altogether. Or another dimension. Take your pick as I am still not completely sure. The land she ends up on is made up of several different groups of people all coexisting in different parts of this world. Turns out Kricket is half Rafe-the group she ends up with-and half Almeedian, the liars and war mongers. She is also a priestess of the Almeedian House, and has all kinds of different powers-only a few of which she knows about. The Almeedians know exactly what she is and wants her back, enough to start a war.
Not only is this Kricket’s story, it’s also Trey’s story. He’s the warrior sent from Rafe with his team to bring her home. And so it becomes Kricket’s and Trey’s romance as well. I thought both of these characters were pretty great. The author has also brought to life the rest of Trey’s team, as well as some key players from Almeeda-most notably, Kyon, who wants Kricket as his consort. He is definitely one of the main villains here, and very evil in his intentions.
This book ended up being pretty much non-stop action and adventure. It’s the story of a war, and Kricket is pretty much the catalyst for the war, meaning she is right smack in the middle of everything. It’s very violent at times, but it’s also got it’s romantic moments. The world building was phenomenal. So descriptive, I could picture this world perfectly, and all the characters as well. Extremely well written, and I enjoyed every page of it.
While the first book was young adult, I would categorize this one as more of a new adult read, due to sexual situations and violence. In case you are wondering, this is not a stand alone, and you should read the first one prior to this. I actually re-read the first one before I read this one, so I would be completely ready for this one. I completely enjoyed it all over again, and it was definitely worth the extra time spent.
