Short and sweet.
One of the things I like about the series is how well scenes are depicted from completely different perspectives. This short story is basically a bonus chapter told from Cal’s perspective and set just about the time Ariana begins to notice him (in True Calling). Another thing I like is how natural and believable the banter is between the characters, particularly Cal and Ben. Just as in the series, characterization is strong in this installment. Everyone has a unique voice. I also love how easily the story evokes emotion. I felt the pain of unrequited love right along Cal. Painful and sweet all at the same time.
I think I got more out of this than I might have had I not already read True Calling. So, that being said, I’d recommend this quick read for right after True Calling. The series is highly recommended for fans of YA romance with sci-fi/dystopian themes.
