The only thing hotter than the summers in Phoenix is the temper of a police detective who can’t figure out why young girls keep disappearing. Katalina Wimple is that detective. Her obsession with the missing girls makes her the best person for the job, but it also serves as a refuge from the problems in her own life.
The first word that comes to mind after reading The Lost Girls is simply….wow.
The Lost Girls is part of Jason Halstead’s Dark Earth series. However, coming from someone who has never read anything else from the series, I can tell you that this book works very well as a stand-alone piece. As a first time reader of anything to do with this series, I could tell when there were parts that had something to do with the series. However, Jason wrote the explanations into the story line in such a way that it flowed very well. I never once felt like the story line or the integrity of the book was put on hold to lay out back story. Regardless of what was being explained, the story never loses forward momentum.
One of the things I loved about this book is the tech. I am a big fan of weaponry and such that are crafted in a way that makes them highly effective yet easily concealed (i.e. Angel’s stakes in the tv series ‘Angel’, Lucien’s sword in the first Underworld movie, or the sterling silver knives that pop out of Abigail Whistler’s boot tips in Blade Trinity – just for a few visual examples). They’re great because the big bad never sees them coming. Katalina is a walking example of this. The Lost Girls takes place far in the future from present day and by then, if something breaks, they fix it with some crazy bionic upgrade that makes you 10 times better than you were before you were messed up. I don’t want to say too much more on the topic because I am afraid that if I do, it will give away some great scenes that will make you smile. It’s an evil smile but no smile should be ruined. *wink wink*
Overall, this book was a fantastic and incredibly fast paced read! It’s got a sexy cast and a storyline full of action, mystery and more twists and turns than you will be able to keep up with (and you never see ANY of them coming!). I am greatly looking forward to being able to squeeze more of the series into my reading schedule! The Lost Girls gets 4.5 stars!
