REVIEW by Heather: Between You and Me by Emma McLaughlin and Nicole Kraus – Released Today! (@_shoe_girl_)

What happens when you are followed by millions . . . and loved by none?

Twenty-seven-year-old Logan Wade is trying to build a life for herself far from her unhappy childhood in Oklahoma. Until she gets the call that her famous cousin needs a new assistant— an offer she can’t refuse.

Logan hasn’t seen Kelsey in person since their parents separated them as kids; in the meantime, Kelsey Wade has grown into Fortune Magazine’s most powerful celebrity. But their reunion is quickly overshadowed by the toxic dynamic between Kelsey and her parents as Logan discovers that, beneath the glossy façade, the wounds that caused them to be wrenched apart so many years ago have insidiously warped into a show-stopping family business.

As Kelsey tries desperately to break away and grasp at a “real” life, beyond the influence of her parents and managers, she makes one catastrophic misstep after another, and Logan must question if their childhood has left them both too broken to succeed. Logan risks everything to hold on, but when Kelsey unravels in the most horribly public way, Logan finds that she will ultimately have to choose between rescuing the girl she has always protected . . . and saving herself.

This book started off kind of slow; it took me a few chapters to really get a feel for it.  Luckily it DID pick up and get pretty good, however, not long after that I grew tired of the authors’ need to give EVERY LITTLE DETAIL.

Logan and Kelsey haven’t seen each other since Logan was thirteen years old and in an accident together, but Kelsey’s assistant knows that Kelsey is stressed out and could really use a true friend; not someone only around for her money, so she calls Logan. After agreeing to a visit to see her cousin Kelsey, Logan ends up feeling “in the way”.  Kelsey didn’t even know that Logan was invited, but on one of Kelsey’s “sneak out” trips for some alone time Logan follows her and they start to reconnect.  After Kelsey’s assistant is abruptly fired, Kelsey offers the job of her assistant to Logan, and since nothing at home is going right personally or professionally, Logan agrees.

From there the story follows Logan and Kelsey on a world tour, and quite honestly, I felt like I was reading a book that was pulled from headlines of Britney Spears’ breakdown a few years ago.  Kelsey meets a “regular” guy, and ends up marrying him, getting pregnant, etc.  She also goes through a breakdown, gets a divorce, starts partying and going crazy in public, loses custody of her daughter, and her father is made “conservator”.  Sound familiar?  Straight up Britney.

Honestly, I feel as if the book had a good concept, but fell short on the execution.  I seriously felt like I was reading a novel based on Britney’s life.

I give Between You and Me 2 1/2 Heels.

  1. Definitely does feel like a ripped-from-the-headlines account of Britney’s life and experiences, which I liked — though I agree that parts have been slow. I’m about halfway through this one now and interested to see what will happen.
