Audiobook Review: THE HIDDEN REALM Series by Heather Renee

Some things are better left unknown.

Dawsyn ~ All my life Id been nothing more than the alphas daughter. After twenty-two years of that existence, I finally leave my pack, intent to figure out who I am.

Except a week into my newfound freedom, I discover that dragon shifters exist. Not only that, but the first one I stumble upon turns out to be my mate. One I don’t want and never asked for.

Its not like Cillian is bad on the eyes or that I’m repulsed by his grumpy demeanor. In fact, everything about him is rather appealing. He just wasn’t part of the plan.

Cillian ~ The realm I call home is under attack and things are only getting worse as the weeks pass. When I decide to do something about that, I get more than I bargained for.

I get Dawsyn Chase.

A wolf shifter with a bite as vicious as her words that also happens to be my fated mate. She’s a distraction I intend to stay away from, but when the world demands otherwise It could be more than our bond at stake if were not careful.

Suffering from a severe book hangover, I had no idea what to scoop up when my Audible credit came up. I recently listened to Queen Me, Amber Lynn Natusch’s novel in the Immortal Vices & Virtues shared world (reviewed on my author website only because the author is a client). Ever since then, Audible has been recommending the other IV&V authors as books to listen to. Among those recommendations was the boxed set for The Hidden Realm, a complete series within Heather Renee’s Mystics and Mayhem world. I knew of Heather from working in the book world but had not read any of her books. As I am currently on a quest to actually read all of these authors I’ve been working around for years, I said screw it and snapped up the boxed set for one Audible credit. At the time, I wasn’t aware that the series was part of a larger world so I didn’t know this isn’t where the story really begins. However, the series story is standalone within the world so it didn’t require that I go back and read the other series first.

I loved both of the main characters. Dawsyn is the sunshine in the equation but in an unstoppable smartass kind of a way. She’s not a marshmallow by any stretch. The grump is Cillian but it’s because he’s on a mission and doesn’t want to be distracted. The universe, of course, doesn’t care about what they want. From the second they meet, they are drawn to each other, no matter how badly they want to fight it.

So I want to mention something about the romance in this book. It’s there. The attraction between Dawsyn and Cillian is undeniable. The angst is there. The crazy sexual tension is there. But the cover of this boxed set is much spicier than the content is. The first book is 🌶️ out of five chili peppers, book two is 🌶️🌶️, and book three is 🌶️🌶️🌶️. That’s not to say the story is lacking in any way. Instead of a lot of spice, you get a robust story with a heavy dose of world fantasy lore to learn. And there is lots of action. Shifters, magic, fae, witches and warlocks, warring supernaturals, prophecies, and so much more. I can honestly say, I was never bored. There are no parts of the series that felt sluggish. Just when you think these two have a minute to breathe, something else goes sideways.

Overall, I loved the series. The story kept me hooked from the beginning until the very end. I only wish there had been more. If you’re looking to read the books individually, The Hidden Realm is a trilogy consisting of the titles A Dragon’s Wolf, A Dragon’s Curse, and A Dragon’s Fate.
