Well, here we are, back in the itty bitty town of Forks, Washington. As always, the teen-angst filled love triangle is there: Edward – Bella – Jacob. However, I want to focus on someone else. I loved this book for one reason – Jasper. WHO KNEW?!?!?! Mostly seen as the creepy “brother”, not many people had paid much attention to Jasper…..until now.
When a vampire, hell-bent on revenge, is causing problems in Forks, Jasper is the character that our main peeps have to turn to for advice. Due to his background, he plays a key role in preparing them for what comes next.
Through the first two books, I didn’t know what to think of Jasper. He was weird and awkward and…..well, creepy. Eclipse gives you a detailed look at who he is, where he came from and what his problem is. As it turns out, he’s a great character! He is, by FAR my favorite character in this book. Usually clinging to the Edward/Bella storyline (yes, I am Team Edward), I found myself anticipating more scenes that involved Jasper and bit-by-bit, piece-by-piece unlocking his mystery.
As for the infamous love triangle, I found myself wanting to slap the crap out of Jacob. I won’t go into detail because I don’t want to ruin it for the two of you out there who have not read the series or seen the movies. I will just say this: he pulls a wicked boner move in this book that sealed his fate as far as I am concerned. I officially can’t stand him as a character. Don’t get me wrong, Edward is no saint in my eyes either. We will just leave it at that because I am afraid that if I say much more, I will give away too much detail.
As for my previous complaints about her writing, I give Stephenie Meyer credit for Eclipse. By this point in her writing, she either got a great editor or just got a better grasp on writing as a whole. Her writing style developed by leaps and bounds in Eclipse. Much better. I didn’t find myself wanting to put the book down because of her taking five pages to describe Bella brushing her hair.
Also previously noted in the review for Twilight and New Moon, this series has a great cast of characters and one of the things that I love as the books progress is the back story that we are getting on the supporting characters. We didn’t get much at all in Twilight but New Moon started to uncover a lot more. Eclipse dives even further into revealing the history that each of these characters has and it’s a great touch to the book. Bringing to light why they are the way they are makes it so the reader doesn’t get sick of only hearing about three people.
One more thing I want to mention is the tribal histories. There is a fantastic scene in this book where Billy Black is telling the tribal histories and it really is captivating. I personally love Native American lore and Eclipse gives you a glimpse into the wolves and how they came to be. Very interesting to listen to.
Overall, I loved this book. I will give it 4 stars!
