Waking up in a stranger’s bed, Henrietta Markham encounters the most darkly sensual man she has ever met. The last thing she remembers is being attacked by a housebreaker—yet being rescued by the notorious Earl of Pentland feels much more dangerous!
Since the cataclysmic failure of his marriage, ice has flowed in Rafe St. Alban’s veins. But meeting impetuous, all-too-distracting governess Henrietta heats his blood to the boiling point.
When she’s accused of theft, Rafe finds himself offering to clear her name. Can Henrietta’s innocence bring this hardened rake to his knees?
What can you really say about a bodice ripper?
I mean, other than admitting the shameful fact that I like them… and not in as ironic a way as I like people.
I liked Henrietta and Rafe. I thought they were plausible if not entirely believable… but then again books would be way more boring if they were always about average people you meet on the street. This book has the clichéd “she’s a virgin, he’s a whore,” but since it’s a bodice ripper with “RAKE” in the title, it was to be expected. What wasn’t expected was the what, why, and how. Oh, and that Henrietta didn’t just shrug and go with it. OH! And that when they hit their strife, Henrietta said “I should’ve known better, I’m an idiot.” Love her for that. Basically, it set you up for a “normal” fluff story, and instead had a bit more depth. It felt real, and I appreciated that.
The plot was interesting. It wasn’t always obvious what was going to happen, which is refreshing in a romance novel. I mean, there were some parts where you were like “oh, he’s going to…” but it wasn’t the whole book, and it was enough to keep me turning the pages and not just skimming for the dirty bits.
Not that I ever do that. *shifty*
“Rake with a Frozen Heart” is a solid 3 stars. It was a refreshing morsel to feed my secret shame.
