REVIEW by Jena: One Grave at a Time (Night Huntress Series #6) by Jeaniene Frost (@jeaniene_frost)

Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans’ voodoo queen just keeps on giving-leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.

I had a bit of a hard time with this book.  The book itself is fantastic but it felt like the end.  Everything about the book felt like the end.  For someone highly anticipating the release of books 6, 7 and 8, the end is not a good feeling to have.

My favorite thing about this book is the creepy factor.  All the previous books in this series have had big baddies that were tangible.  They could be hurt for their sins.  The big bad in book six is a creepy mofo that is lacking in corporeal form.  That makes it a touch difficult to punch him in his face hole.

Not being able to do anything about what is being done to you (supernaturally speaking) is hellacreepy.  I actually found myself wishing this could be made into a movie because it would make an excellent thriller flick!

I want to touch back on what I meant about this book feeling like the end.  Through this whole book, it feels like we are gearing up for there to be no more story.  Bones and Cat have this amazing little heartfelt chat about his concerns regarding her future if she were to continue on her current path.  Now, I am not talking the normal over-protective “I won’t let you get yourself killed” kind of chat.  I am talking about the emotional implications of their chosen lifestyle.  It’s a good chat with some very valid points on both sides of the net.  But it feels like the end.

Even the way the book wrapped up.  This is the first one in the series I remember hearing “epilogue” in the audio book.  I could be wrong because I went through most of this series as audio books and may have just missed it because I knew there were more books to move onto.  This being the latest Night Huntress Series release, I knew going in that I had to hurry up and wait once I reached the end.

That’s another thing!!  A friend of mine (Melissa) listened to the audio book at the same time as me and she and I would spend our work breaks chatting about where we were and what we thought thus far.  I didn’t catch it but she said this was also the first book that said ‘The End’ at the end.  GASP!!!

So I have a theory about all of the The End feelings that we both gathered from this book.  I am wondering if Jeaniene wrote this book thinking that it would be the end and then got contracted for more books.  I also have a theory that maybe that feeling is because, after the little chat between Cat and Bones, maybe the next three books are just shadow boxes on Jeaniene’s website are the start of a new life for our super sizzly couple.  As I said, just theories.

One thing I want to mention is that we DO have a new player by the end of this book.  This new player is up to some serious badness and that particular story line is left wide open by the end.  Here’s an e-mail Melissa and I shared once we finished.  We were both flabbergasted.

I just finished and there is a great big LOOSE END left WIDE OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  We are going to have to wait until the next book to find out what exactly Madigan is up to and who the XXXXXXXX accomplice is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They don’t find out by the end of this book!!!

Then, her response….

So right.  I finished listening last night.  The suspense.  I will definatly miss Kat, Bones and Ian until the next book.  😀

I am giving One Grave at a Time 5 stars!!!  That’s 6 for 6, kids!!  Such a completely fantastic series!!

So that brings us to the end of what is released in the Night Huntress Series.  I wont lie, I am sad.  I am in Literary Limbo for yet another beloved series.  Except this time, there is no light at the end of the tunnel because the release date for book 7 has yet to be announced.  If you are new to the site and aren’t familiar with Literary Limbo, click here.  I can say that at least we only have to wait 19 more days for Once Burned!!  Once Burned is book 1 in the Night Prince series, starring our friendly neighborhood vamp, Vlad Tepesh.  Well, neighborhood vamp if you happen to live inRomania.  Here’s the trailer for Once Burned – Release Date 6/26/12!!!
