Curiosity is definitely going to get me dead one of these days. Probably real soon.
I’m Gin Blanco.
You might know me as the Spider, the most feared assassin in the South. I’m retired now, but trouble still has a way of finding me. Like the other day when two punks tried to rob my popular barbecue joint, the Pork Pit. Then there was the barrage of gunfire on the restaurant. Only, for once, those kill shots weren’t aimed at me. They were meant for Violet Fox. Ever since I agreed to help Violet and her grandfather protect their property from an evil coalmining tycoon, I’m beginning to wonder if I’m really retired. So is Detective Donovan Caine. The only honest cop in Ashland is having a real hard time reconciling his attraction to me with his Boy Scout mentality. And I can barely keep my hands off his sexy body. What can I say? I’m a Stone elemental with a little Ice magic thrown in, but my heart isn’t made of solid rock. Luckily, Gin Blanco always gets her man . . . dead or alive.
So, I saw in my Twitter feed that there was an Elemental Assassin Read-A-Long! Since I just read the first book not long ago (my review here), and had already purchased the second book, I figured I’d join the read-a-long. 🙂
Web of Lies picks up shortly after Spider’s Bite leaves off. Gin is retired from being an assassin and is just focusing on the Pork Pit when one day a girl comes in looking for the Tin Man. Before Gin can get in many questions, someone starts shooting. Welcome to Gin’s life, she is now out of retirement.
Gin has to find a way to track down Violet, and figure out exactly why someone wants her dead. Upon further investigation, she uncovers a really bad situation involving Violet and her grandfather, and decides to take on the people responsible. Problems? Of course. They can be summed up by names: Mab Monroe and Donovan Caine. Mab is tied into every corrupt thing/person in the city, and Donovan the “good and moral” Detective just can’t let Gin go around killing people.
I really liked Web of Lies! I actually liked it better than the 1st book, as it seemed to be faster paced which kept my attention a lot better!! Thank goodness Gin has help from Finn, Sophia, and Jo-Jo (I love the supporting characters…they are just so full of personality quirks) again or else she’d have been dead within the first couple chapters! Gin is also getting some interest from a new admirer….and I have to say, I’m rooting for him. Donovan doesn’t deserve Gin. Well, perhaps he would, if he got the stick out of his a**.
Only thing stopping me from giving Web of Lies a “5 Heel” rating…..the repetition. I can not stand when books repeat things from the previous book(s). I make sure to read books in order so that I won’t be “lost”. If others can’t/don’t/won’t do the same, then that {should be} their issue. Anyways! I will be reading book 3 (Venom) in a couple weeks, to continue with the Read-A-Long! I can’t wait to see what others have to say about the books….it should be lotsa fun!!!!
