[JENA] We have readers all over the world and I am always curious to see where our favorite authors are from. Where do you call base camp?
CAT MASON [CAT] I am originally from Granite City, Illinois; a little town just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis Missouri. Currently, I live in Southwest Virginia with my husband and three children.
[JENA] A common trend as of late is cross-genre authors. It has become relatively uncommon to come across an author who only writes in one specific genre. It seems there are a lot of writers who like to dip their toes in all sorts of pools. Which genre or genres do you write?
[CAT] I write Contemporary Romance, though they vary in content.
[JENA] Writers get inspiration from all over the place. Movies, books, music, people in their life, their own life, etc. Who or what is your most common muse?
[CAT] I get inspiration from all avenues, but music that is the top. I am always listening to something. My playlists are on every device I own and I have headphones hidden everywhere, just in case.
[JENA] Are you 100% independently published or do you have traditional contracts as well? If you are 100% indie, would you ever consider a traditional publishing contract? Why or why not?
[CAT] I have a contract with a small publisher, under my real name. Though, Cat Mason books are independently published. I don’t know if I would sign with a big time publisher, I like the feel of it being up to me. (Well, at least to a point.)
[JENA] Writer’s block sucks. What do you do to overcome the blank stare when it hits you with everything it has got?
[CAT] Music! My go to is always music. Of course, I have great friends who have been there since page one of book one and even before. They know my goal and when I get off track they are great at kicking my ass and getting me back on track.
[JENA] Let’s gab about your books. What fictiony goodness have you already unleashed on the general populous?
[CAT] Escaping Me, is book one of Shaft on Tour. They are crazy rockers and there is not a dull moment on or off the bus.
Facing Me, is book two and was released just a couple weeks ago. It continues the story with the group as things escalate with the band and they grow in popularity.
[JENA] What’s next for you and your writing? Any new titles coming out?
[CAT] I am currently working on books three and four in Shaft on Tour. Book three, Chasing Me, will be out in August and book four has yet to be named but will be out in before Halloween. Book three is Hunter’s book and if you have read the series so far, Hunter tends to command attention. His book has been very interesting to say the least so far.
[JENA] The latest trend with the indie author world is massive book signings and conventions featuring anywhere from 20 authors to 200 authors. What has your experience been at these events? Do you enjoy them? Or do they make you twitch and sweat?
[CAT] I haven’t been to one yet, but I am nervous at the thought. I do know that my books have gotten lots of love, but you always have the fear of being asked if you are the one catering the event. HA HA HA
[JENA] Do you have any appearances coming up? If so, tell us when and where (provide links if you have them).
[CAT] YES! I can’t wait! I am going to be at the signing in Knoxville in July, as a reader of course.
On November 8th, I will be at Rebels and Readers Author event. It’s at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington, WV.
In 2015, I will be at Naughty Nashville and am booking others right now, so check out my author page on Facebook for updates, I will post as I confirm.
[JENA] Now it’s time for some just-for-fun questions! If you were digitized like Tron and put on the internet what site would you visit first?
[CAT] I would be on Facebook! Plenty enough trouble and shenanigans for me to stir up there.
[JENA] Have you ever Googled yourself? If so, were you surprised or shocked by any of the results?
[CAT] Yes, the main thing that shocked me was the attempts at pirating books. Though I was ecstatic to see blogs quoting and making teasers of the Shaft guys! That makes me all giddy and fangirly. Yes, I am one screaming flailing mess of a nerd when I get told someone loved my books.
[JENA] What would you do with a million dollars?
[CAT] Pay off our debts and buy a house and new vehicles. Then my husband could quit his job and help more at home so that I can focus on writing and traveling to promote. I really am pretty simplistic. I don’t want to be insanely rich, just comfortable.
[JENA] If you were trapped on a desert island with one CD that you could listen to for the rest of your life what would it be?
[CAT] Hinder! Oh any one of the Hinder cds. Although Welcome to the Freakshow would have to be it IF I had to choose one of theirs because, Austin Winkler’s voice is sex! I would bottle that up and sell it, or mostly keep it for myself. ‘I Don’t Wanna Believe’ is my absolute favorite song they have out. (I’m fully aware that Austin is no longer with Hinder, so if he wants to come sing me to sleep every night… I’m good with that.)
[JENA] How do you consume – read the book then watch the movie or watch the movie then read the book?
[CAT] Books are ALWAYS better than the movie! There are plenty of books I love that I would cry to see them made into movies that would do no justice to them. For me, I need to feel everything and so many movies are just not able to do that. I always read the book first and then sometimes forgo the movie all together.
[JENA] If you could live forever, would you? Why or why not?
[CAT] YES! I would just have to get creative in ways of entertaining myself and I have plenty of ideas.
[JENA] If you were faced with the zombie apocalypse and had to pick five people to be on your survival team, who would you pick?
[CAT] Jenn Rivera, because she watches the Walking Dead and would totally know how to stay alive.
Austin Winkler, because someone has to sing to me if there is no power for my iPod.
Chelsea Camaron, because she writes my favorite MC series and I can’t survive shit without my Hellions.
My son Blake because he is like a ten year old McGyver and I need someone who can think that way.
Do I get a fictional character? I may need Jax Teller, seeing as how not only can he handle weapons, but the bike, the hotness. Do I really need to justify my thinking here? It’s lonely in the Zombie Apocalypse and I plan to start off on the right foot. LOL
[JENA] Imagine the concept of reincarnation is real, who or what would you hope to come back as in your next life?
[CAT] If I had to pick a person, it would be a Walmart greeter with an unlimited amount of iPhone recording and photo data. You know you wish you thought of that! I would have the biggest blog following EVER!
If it is a thing… I would want to be the Harley Charlie Hunnam (Jax Teller) rides on in SOA. Yeah, you know you wish you had thought of that too!
[JENA] Thank you for participating in Indies In Their Undies!
