RELEASE DAY REVIEW by Lorna: Tracks of Her Tears (Rogue Winter Novellas #1) by Melinda Leigh (@MelindaLeigh1 , @Mollykatie112)

Tracks of her TearsIn the first thrilling Rogue Winter Novella, sleepy little Solitude, Oregon, wakes up to another deadly threat.

County investigator Seth Harding intends to spend the holidays with his newly reconciled family, but a few days before Christmas, a homicide thwarts his plan. Seth arrives at the scene and makes a painful discovery: the victim is his brother-in-law’s girlfriend. Her apartment has been ransacked and her toddler left motherless. To make matters worse, Seth’s brother-in-law, Bruce, is missing. With Solitude locked in a rare, deadly deep freeze and the temperature plummeting, the residents launch a desperate search.

Seth calls his wife, social worker Carly Taylor, to take the case so the little girl doesn’t get lost in the foster care system. With the holidays near, Carly brings the child home with them to celebrate Christmas. But when the Taylor farm is also trashed, Seth and Carly must race against time—and against a paralyzing winter storm—to find Bruce and catch a killer in the first pulse-pounding sequel to the Rogue River Novellas.

Awhile back, I read and enjoyed a series of mystery novellas written by Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. Well they are at it again with this new novella series set in the same rural town in Oregon, and features the same characters. The first book is by Leigh, and the next is by Elliot. Not sure how many books are in this series, although the last one had four, with each author writing two books. I received this novella from Net Galley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

It’s just a few days before Christmas and the small town of Solitude is visited with the death of someone close to the family of Special Investigator, Seth Harding and his wife, social worker,Carly. Recently the couple reunited after being separated due to the natures of their jobs, and never having any time together. Now with a death investigation of Carly’s brother’s girlfriend, and her brother Bruce, being missing, this Christmas promises to be even more harrowing for the family. It doesn’t help matters that Bruce’s girlfriend left behind a baby girl, one that is all alone in the world now.

Since this is a novella, I am not going into the story much deeper than that. I enjoyed the characters as I did in the previous novellas, and the small town atmosphere. The mystery was not that complex, but involved some old fashioned taking to the streets and interviewing to solve it. There’s at least two good suspects to ponder about, and it all plays against the backdrop of it being so close to Christmas. We do reunite with other characters from the previous novellas, as well as these two main ones. That’s always nice-especially knowing that they are going to be the main characters of the next novella, Stevie, a policewoman and Carly’s sister, and Zane, the sheriff of the town-and now a couple.

I would recommend this to mystery readers, and although it’s not considered young adult, I would put the age range to 15 plus-due to no sexual situations. And one more thing, I am still not sure why this book is titled this, it’s a mystery to me.

About Melinda Leigh

Melinda LeighMelinda Leigh is a fully recovered banker. A life-long lover of books, she started writing as a way to preserve her sanity while raising her kids. Over the next few years, she learned a few things about writing a book and decided the process was way more fun than analyzing financial statements. Melinda’s debut novel, SHE CAN RUN, was nominated for Best First Novel by the International Thriller Writers. Her bestselling books have twice been nominated for the Daphne du Maurier Award.

Melinda holds a 2nd degree belt in Kenpo Karate. She’s dabbled in Arnis stick fighting, studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and taught women’s self-defense. She lives in a messy house in the suburbs with her husband, two kids, a couple of shelter dogs and two rescue cats who clearly run the show. With such a pleasant life, she has no explanation for the sometimes dark and disturbing nature of her imagination. Find out more about Melinda by visiting melindaleighauthor.com.

This sounds pretty good even if the mystery is fairly straightforward. And I’m glad you got to spend some time in a familiar locale with familiar characters, Lorna. Nice review! 🙂
