Awhile back, I read and enjoyed a series of mystery novellas written by Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. Well they are at it again with this new novella series set in the same rural town in Oregon, and features the same characters. The first book is by Leigh, and the next is by Elliot. Not sure how many books are in this series, although the last one had four, with each author writing two books. I received this novella from Net Galley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

It’s just a few days before Christmas and the small town of Solitude is visited with the death of someone close to the family of Special Investigator, Seth Harding and his wife, social worker,Carly. Recently the couple reunited after being separated due to the natures of their jobs, and never having any time together. Now with a death investigation of Carly’s brother’s girlfriend, and her brother Bruce, being missing, this Christmas promises to be even more harrowing for the family. It doesn’t help matters that Bruce’s girlfriend left behind a baby girl, one that is all alone in the world now.

Since this is a novella, I am not going into the story much deeper than that. I enjoyed the characters as I did in the previous novellas, and the small town atmosphere. The mystery was not that complex, but involved some old fashioned taking to the streets and interviewing to solve it. There’s at least two good suspects to ponder about, and it all plays against the backdrop of it being so close to Christmas. We do reunite with other characters from the previous novellas, as well as these two main ones. That’s always nice-especially knowing that they are going to be the main characters of the next novella, Stevie, a policewoman and Carly’s sister, and Zane, the sheriff of the town-and now a couple.

I would recommend this to mystery readers, and although it’s not considered young adult, I would put the age range to 15 plus-due to no sexual situations. And one more thing, I am still not sure why this book is titled this, it’s a mystery to me.
