RELEASE DAY REVIEW by Trish: Saven: Deception (Saven #1) by Siobhan Davis (@siobhandavis)

Saven DeceptionI’ve fallen hard for an alien, but he’s harboring secrets.
Massive secrets that threaten the very essence of humanity.
How can I give him my heart when his race plan on taking my future?

Sadie Owens has been slowly dying inside. Bit by bit, piece by piece, day by day. Trapped in a life she hates, she relies on only one person–herself.
Despised by her family and betrayed by an unscrupulous government, Sadie dreams of a different life. When she is chosen to participate in the government’s new social experiment, she is ecstatic at the prospect of spending six months in Thalassic City, the shiny new city under the sea.
Immediately drawn to Logan Chandler, Sadie is captivated by the beautiful boy with the ocean-blue eyes. Logan seems to embody everything that has been forbidden, but he isn’t all he appears to be.
Confused over Logan’s true intentions and concerned when best friend Jenna starts transforming in front of her eyes, Sadie partners with newcomer Jarod in a bid to uncover the government’s real agenda. The truth is more shocking than anything she could ever have imagined.
When Sadie finally understands why the Saven walk among us, will it be too late to save her heart and the human race?

Saven: Deception is an intense and gripping kick off to a brand new sci fi series by Siobhan Davis. Sadie is a tough girl who wants more than what life and the heartless government have handed her. She’s thrilled at the chance that being selected for the Experimento will give her. No more working the lines at her dull job, a chance to go back to school, and maybe even a shot at love. But although Thalassic City is all she could hope for and more, it isn’t meant to last, and while she tries to bury that knowledge and enjoy the experience, other things are happening that could reach far beyond the beautiful façade of the city.
As in the True Calling series, one of the strongest points of this story is the seemingly effortless way the author elicits emotion from the reader. From the start, I was drawn into the world and felt like I was experiencing everything right next to Sadie. I found it hard to put this book down and lost more than a few hours of sleep reading it.
The plot in this book is complex and well-developed, blending the feel of sci fi and dystopian into something thrilling. There are some notes of mystery, and the book features more than a fair share of romance, but the story doesn’t lose sight of its focus.
Although this reads as YA, much of the plot revolves around sex, though no one is actually described in the act. I think it would be fine for an older teen, but some of the ideas might not be appropriate for a younger one. Also, I don’t think the concept of distance and scale with regard to the solar system and placement of nearby planets were quite correct, but luckily, such was not central to the story so it was easy to disregard during the reading.
So, overall, I found it easy to love this book. I would highly recommend this to fans of YA sci fi and dystopian. The romance is sweet, but also tense, and there are more than a few near misses and twists to keep the reader engaged. I can’t wait to read the next one.
