Lorna’s Review

I do love the occasional Christmas romance, so this is the one I chose this year. I picked it from a pretty huge group of Christmas reads on Net Galley, so I was hoping for a good one. I really think that I got that and was very happy with my choice. I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Eve is one of three partners of an event company in New York CIty, and her job has become her entire life. No time for love and a deep loneliness after losing her beloved grandmother who raised her. Christmas without any family isn’t something to look forward to. But Eve is the total optimist, the glass is half full type of person. She’s sweet as the day is long, but she still wants that special love. She is hired to decorate a penthouse on 5th avenue for Christmas and cook and fill the freezer full of gourmet meals while the owner is away. She goes knowing a huge blizzard is coming and knows it could be days before she could get out of the penthouse again. She didn’t count on the owner being home, especially an owner that didn’t know she was coming.
Lucas is a famous dark crime writer. After losing his wife to death three years before, he hates Christmas. So rather than go to be with his family, he lies about where he is, and hides out at his own penthouse. When Eve shows up he first thinks she’s a criminal-which actually was a fun scene-complete with the police. The two together are complete opposites. While she’s the sweet optimist, he’s cynical, arrogant, and closed off. He has no desire for company, for any decorations, but when he tastes Eve’s first meal she fixes him, all bets are off as far as how much he loves her cooking. When they are thrown together for several days due to the blizzard, they begin to talk and more importantly for Lucas’s career, he begins the book that is due on Christmas Eve.
Not only was this a romance, it’s also a story about the loss of the person the characters are closest to, the healing that needs to happen, and this applied to both of them. It’s not all hearts and flowers by any means and they do clash at times. I ended up enjoying the characters, Eve in particular. Lucas is prickly a lot of the time, but we slowly see him open up, all the while swearing he will never love anyone again. Ever. But chemistry as hot as this can’t be ignored.
It was fun seeing what the two go through to get to their happily ever after, even though it was sad at times. I ended up enjoying the whole thing. It is the third in a series, and the reader does see the women main characters from the other books, but I never felt I had missed anything by not reading the other two. Recommended to adult contemporary romance readers, especially ones that like a good Christmas read. Adult due to sensual scenes.
