Raene and the Three Bears is book two in The Alder Tales, stories set in a post-war future where mankind has branched off into groups closely related to their animal totems. Eighteen-year-old Raene’s life has just been uprooted. Not only has her new friend disappeared, but her beloved uncle has effectively banished her to the Alderwood to marry one of Blossom’s three bear-totem brothers.
As usual, I’m blown away. I guessed the outcome early on, but then second and third guessed it. The brothers don’t make Raene’s decision easy, and even in the last moment, I wasn’t entirely sure who she would pick. The relationship building in this love triangle is some of the best I’ve seen in a book. There were good and bad things with both suiters. Anyway, I loved it.
I was also glad that Blossom doesn’t just fade into the background. I was invested in her story in Blossom and the Beast and really hoped this book would reveal what happens to her. It does, and it’s gritty. I have no idea how she and Kaide are going to make it work, but I’m totally looking forward to the next book to find out if they do (ok, actually, I prefer to think ‘how’ over ‘if’).
Beyond that, I think I saw a glimmer of foreshadowing. Not certain, but there seems to be someone who just may be the heroine of the next story. I’m not going to say whom. Anyway, it’s piqued my curiosity.
Although the description mentions this is a version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, I’d say that it stops at the hair and bear totems and is truly its own, original story.
Overall, I loved this story. It’s a rather clean read, but a very emotionally gripping and engaging romance.
