Race the Darkness, book one in this series, introduced the reader to Lathan as a peripheral character. I thought he was really strange, but I did want to find out more about him. Hunt the Dawn, the second and last of this series, is Lathan’s story. Maybe he is still a bit strange, but I ended up enjoying his character and his romantic interest, Evanee, immensely!

Lathan works for the FBI as a very special agent. He works alone because his talent is his overly large and extremely sensitive olfactory system. Odors overwhelm him because of how his nose works. So he works in a sealed cabin with evidence in order to use his special sense. Recently he linked thirty something murders to the same serial murderer, one that has been labeled, The Strategist. And while he has a super nose, he is mostly deaf due to a trauma. Evanee has no one to help her in life, so she ends up working at a dive as a waitress, and living at a hotel more suited to the whores that live there. She’s beautiful, but very broken by a life spent fending off her evil to the core, step-brother Junior. When Lathan and Evanee meet it’s like they have each met their other half. Much like what happened to the couple in Race the Darkness. There is a reason for this, but because of spoilers, I am not telling. When Evanee begins having nightmares about the newest victims of The Strategist, and other way weirder things happen to help Lathan in his job thanks to Evanee, The Strategist takes an interest in the couple. Junior is not a happy camper about losing her(who he never really had emotionally)to Lathan. He is the epitomy of evil.
I really ended up loving this book. Way more than the first one, truth be told. I really liked the first, but this one was just so much better to me. I think that’s partially due to the cause of the plight these two find themselves in, serial killers are way more interesting to me than evil cults. Plus, I liked the main characters more in this one. The romance made more sense to me this time as well, due to the completely broken and close to dying(skeletal like)female character in the last book and the immediate sexual attraction the two had, it was too out there, for as fast as it happened. I know there is special this bond, but still…

Sometimes authors write about serial killers and we don’t know why they are the way they are. And we never find out. That doesn’t happen here and I appreciated that. We know fairly early on who he is and later find out his motivations. That was another plus for me.
I found the writing to be good, the pacing good mostly-I do like a bit of a slower romance, but I know there’s a reason-and loved the characters for the most part. The villains are done well, especially Junior. Now there’s a villain to remember, and not in a good way. And of course, The Strategist was evil as the day is long. The characters from Race the Darkness were back in a peripheral way as well.
I would highly recommend this book to paranormal romance readers, adult due to sensual scenes and violence.
