Recently I discovered Worth the Fall by this author about several brothers and their happily ever after stories of falling in love. I enjoyed the whole thing, and then jumped to book three for the next read, leaving out the second in the series, Worth the Risk. Big mistake. I found this book, Worth the Wait, on Net Galley and immediately requested it. When I started reading, I realized pretty much immediately that I needed to go back and read Worth the Risk, because it is pretty much a prequel, of sorts, to this one in a lot of ways. That being said, this could absolutely standalone. Just a romance? Not just.
Nick Walker is an FBI agent and is brother to Hannah. Hannah’s story is told in Worth the Risk, and that book and this one overlap the same timeline. However, since so much of this particular book hinges on what happened a decade before, Nick’s book is told in two different time periods. When the Walker children were young, their parents die. At age nineteen, Nick steps up and begins raising his younger siblings, Hannah, age two, in particular. He also attends college at the same time. He has no time for romance, but when he meets Mia that all changes. On Mia’s part, she is totally smitten with the young man who totes around Hannah to most of their dates together. She’s pretty driven as well, as a brilliant student who promised her parents to become a doctor before ever settling down and marrying. When something horrendous happens to Hannah at age fourteen, Nick and Mia’s romance falls apart. Ten years later, Mia comes back into Nick’s life in a peripheral manner.
I love a good second chance romance, and if ever a couple deserved one, this couple is it. Their history together, the love they shared, raising Hannah together, all of it caused them to never love anyone else again. So much heartbreak surrounding Hannah keeps Nick from being able to be the person that fell in love with Mia. He closes himself off from anything but Hannah and her recovery. A recovery that literally takes years.
Nick was a hard character to like when first met in Worth the Risk. He is overprotective of Hannah to the nth degree. Of course when Hannah falls in love, Nick is having none of it. He does have to get over that rather quickly. With this book, we start to understand why he is the way he is. Thrown into adulthood with four younger siblings at nineteen would be extremely hard for anyone. After Hannah’s ordeal, Nick’s life becomes impossible. Mia becomes the part of his life that goes by the way side. Even though losing her about kills him. Mia changes as well. Once a surgeon, now she changes to psychiatry to become a professional psychiatric grief counselor. I really loved Mia’s character and I don’t know if many could get past the stuff Nick threw at her. Mia has hard choices to make after Nick comes back into her life. She’s already heartbroken over something else in her life, can she take Nick on again knowing what he did to her in the past, is the question here.
These books, The McKinney brothers,and now this one from The Walker brothers, are very real and well written. The romances are never simple. People are broken in some ways, and sometimes a couple gets together that shouldn’t work, but absolutely does. I don’t read a lot of series romances, but this series drew me in and I needed to know what happened with all the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing and really loved the use of the two times periods. Kind of a book within a book, and it worked. Heartwarming at times, these also have steamy moments.
Highly recommended to adult romance readers. A page turner of a well written book.

Yes I actually did think of you. I only recently started reading her probably in the last 6-8 weeks or so. And you are right you would love these! Oh and two series with brothers that are tied together! I know you like brothers. I would start with the first series though. This one will make more sense that way. Can’t wait to see what you think!
