REVIEW by Trish: When You're Ready (Ready #1) by J.L. Berg (@authorjlberg)

She wasn’t ready.

She’d never be ready,

…to say goodbye.

Clare Murray knew that all too well. Still holding the last letter her husband wrote her before he died, those words, written in his quirky, messy handwriting, “When You’re Ready,” still bring her to her knees. And that was so long ago…

Now, when fate brings her face-to-face with a stormy-eyed doctor intent on changing her mind, Clare might finally be willing to take a second chance at love. But when she finally relents and allows Logan Matthews into her heart, their love is tested in all-too-familiar ways. It’s up to them to fight for what they want as Clare learns that you’re never truly ready…

Until you’re ready to risk it all.

Trish’s Review

When You’re Ready is a delightful blend of romance and sexual tension. Clare is a widowed mother who thought she’d never experience love again. Logan is a bachelor whose upbringing left him believing himself incapable of love. Both are proven wrong.

What I loved about this book was that it had a strong plot and wasn’t just a delivery mechanism for the intimate scenes, of which there are plenty. Both Clare and Logan have to overcome some serious baggage on their journey towards becoming a couple. I also liked how Maddie, Clare’s daughter, is woven into the relationship in a realistic and significant way instead of as a mere plot point. And I loved the lead up to Logan and Clare admitting their love, very well done.

As for what I didn’t like so much, the language used is a bit rough. This book has a seriously romantic storyline, but the F-bombs, trash talk, and dirty inner monologues all tended to distract from rather than enhance that. Also, the “now we’re a happy couple” phase, featuring a lot of the two getting it on, seemed to last forever. I have to admit I was rolling my eyes at times as I waited for something, anything, to challenge that status.

Overall, I really liked this story. I think folks who enjoy romance with plenty of racy content will enjoy this book. It definitely earns the 18+ warning in its description.
