Dead to the World opens on New Years Eve. After a long night working at Merlotte’s, Sookie is on her way home pondering her recent break-up with Bill Compton when she sees a man running down the side of the road. He’s shirtless, shoeless and in a frightened panic. Sookie stops the car to offer her aid and the stranger turns on her, fangs out. Sookie is shocked to realize the stranger isn’t a stranger at all – it’s Eric Northman and the usually confident and 100% in-control vampire has absolutely no idea who he is.
After a visit with Pam and Chow, Sookie learns that Shreveport has a new resident witch coven. Following a disagreement with Eric, the head of the coven put a curse on Eric causing him to lose his memory. The vampires are actively looking for the witch to reverse the spell but until they do so, Eric needs to remain hidden. These witches have a secret that makes them a triple threat and they’re looking for Eric to finish what they started. With Bill out of the country on another trip for his vampire directory project, that only leaves Sookie to take the reigns. As if dealing with the responsibility of protecting Eric wasn’t enough, someone close to Sookie’s heart goes missing and she fears the worst.
This is, BY FAR, my favorite book in the series so far!!! See that??? Three exclamation marks. I mean business. I am not a fan of the Bill Compton character and you get to see Sookie start to move on with her life in this book. Plus, two words – shower scene. Charlaine Harris – my hat is off to you. For the first time in my entire life, a book actually made me blush. My only complaint (and it isn’t really a complaint) is that the end of this book leaves you heart broken for Sookie. I felt so horrible for her. However, what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger. This book gets 5 stars!
