Review: Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs

Mechanic and shapeshifter Mercy Thompson, now mated to Adam, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, never knows what the next day (or night) may bring. After all, her world is inhabited by witches, werewolves, and vampires. Three subplots—Mercy’s attempt to return a magical book of fae secrets to a fae friend-of-a-friend, her difficulties integrating into Adam’s pack, and her roommate Samuel’s misery over being a lone Alpha—come together seamlessly, and excitement builds as Mercy and her loved ones go through ever more intense experiences, including a house fire, a suicide attempt, a death sentence, and a reunion between long-ago loves.  While dealing with everything simultaneously, Mercy’s about to find out just how implacable-and dangerous- the fae can be.

Silver Borne is the 5th installment in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.  For existing fans, you’re going to be thrilled.  For new readers, this series is at a point (details and subplots) where you would be better off starting at the beginning.  Patricia Briggs does a fantastic job building this super intricate world full of many different characters (each with their own history) and a complex mythology.  Up until this book, I could easily say that each of these books is a stand alone read.  This far into the series, I don’t think that is true anymore.  However, with that being said, the entire series is well worth starting from the beginning.  You develop a solid “relationship” with each of the characters and learn their reactions and reasons.

Now, as for the story itself – Silver Borne is amazing.  For you vampire fans out there, I’m sorry to inform you that the vampires don’t really make an appearance in this book.  However, we do have a shape shifter, werewolves, gremlins and other little nasties from the fae world, and much more.  I’m sure you’ll make it just fine without the fangy ones for this book.  Silver Borne is packed with action that will literally make your heart race as your breeze through page after page to see what happens next.  There are some incredibly intense moments in this book leaving the reader wonder where the last hundred pages went.

Silver Borne flows so well and sucks you so deep into the story line that the book flies by and you’re left wanting more.  For the romance junkies – Adam and Mercy make a hot couple!  I was a little relieved when I started reading this series and found that it wasn’t another mushy gushy vamp series.  Now that the readers have had 5 books to get to know Mercy, it’s high time we see a little happiness happen in her life.  Although, he IS the local werewolf pack alpha and I’ve had a few horrible visions pop into my head about how that could go very badly and leave Mercy alone yet again.  We shall see….

Patricia Briggs has done it again with this series!  Overall, Silver Borne is an excellent book.  5 stars!!!
