Myranda is a young woman more interested in staying alive than being a hero. Orphaned by a continent-spanning war that has gone on for decades too long and shunned for failing to support it, she has been on the move since she was only a child. One can hardly blame her when she thinks that the chance discovery of a fallen soldier’s priceless cargo is the moment that will change her life. No one could predict just how great that change would be. It will lead her through an adventure of rebels and generals, of wizards and warriors, and of beasts both noble and monstrous. Each step of the way will take her closer to the truth of her potential, of the war, and of the fate of her world.
The Book of Deacon is the first installment of a trilogy by Joseph Lallo (book #2 is The Great Convergence and book #3 is The Battle of Verril). Our story opens with the introduction of our main character, Myranda. She’s a sweet girl forced into a life of solitude and almost never-ending misfortune. Alone and lonely, each day is a fight for survival simply because she disagrees with a war that has been tearing her home land apart for generations. Due to a seemingly accidental string of events, she finds herself on the run and cant even say for sure who she’s running from. Myranda encounters one heart pounding mystery right after the next.
What can I say??? Wonderfully thrilling. Absolutely adventurous. FANTASTICALLY MAGICAL!!!! At first, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. However, this feeling only last for a few pages – 10 at most – and I was HOOKED. You start out this story not quite sure where you are and what is going on. Through the main character’s eyes, you are given the background, piece by piece, until you are caught up to the present. From that point on, this book is such a page burner!! Myranda is a strong female lead with a great presence and solid morals. At the same time, she has a lot of genuinely human fears and insecurities. As the book progresses, you see our character grow and blossom into a truly admirable woman. A woman that young female readers could really look up to. She also has a real bad ass streak buried in there somewhere just waiting to come out and you can feel it hiding under the surface whenever she has a really intense emotional moment. She has something for everyone, male and female readers alike.
In addition to the fabulous female lead, you are introduced to a whole myriad of amazing characters along the way. There are a few characters that you will instantly love and there are some that require time to grow on you. Mr. Lallo has a wonderful talent for description. Thanks to said talent, there is no issue with being able to put yourself in the different places and climates and such that Myranda experiences.
I only have these things to say – #1. I want my own Myn, #2. I wish I could book a long vacation to Entwell, and #3. I can not wait to read/review The Great Convergence!!!
Overall, I give The Book of Deacon 5 stars!!! I most definitely recommend this book to all!
