REVIEW by @Fidget78: Warrior's Rise by LJ DeLeon (@LJ_DeLeon)

For Fae-human half-breed Deva Morgan life as she knows it changes on her thirtieth birthday. One moment she’s a barkeep, the next she is a warrior fated to save Earth from the Dark Lord and his demon horde. Shunned by both her races, she faces a danger-filled quest with few allies. Too bad her powers haven’t fully emerged or stabilized.
For Deva it is life or death, on-the-job training with her companion, Padraig O’Neal, a Fae warrior with a shadowed past. Can he quiet the storm raging inside her, help her harness the growing power within her, and provide a barrier between Deva and a fatal outcome? Will their love be enough to save Deva and stop the Dark Lord’s demons from entering Earth?

After finishing a novel, I usually try to let it percolate in my head for a day or overnight, so when I write the review I can try to be as objective as possible and let everything fall into place.  Once I have what I want to say drafted, I usually go to both Amazon and Goodreads and take a look at the previous reader reviews.  These reviews DO NOT affect my review but I like to look at the good and the not so good reviews and try to give my opinion on issues others found less desirable.  You see, I really like to give the author the benefit of doubt.  Anyone who puts words on paper and puts it out there for us to read are extremely brave or very foolhardy.  My personal opinion, I think they’re very brave.  Since I’m hopeless at writing a story, I find people who can exceptional.  Even if the novel doesn’t strike a chord with me, I take my hat off to the author because hopefully another reader will love it.  Along those lines, I may not like the storyline, but the writing could be top notch and I will make note of it.  I hope I’m flexible in my opinion.
Get on with it, you’re thinking.  Okay.
This book was another departure from my usual reading choices.  I can’t even remember why it caught my attention.  What a surprise for me.  I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.  I like a lot of different characters in some of my books, I love reading about the Fae and I like a bit of uncertainty.  Check, check and check.  This was a book that matched the mood I was in and matched it very well.  Not everyone desires to have so many characters floating around in a novel and depending on my mood, I don’t either.
I liked the storyline and the characters.  There was mystery because you knew there was a “mole” but you didn’t know who and no I didn’t figure it out.    I enjoyed that the heroine didn’t just explode into her powers and even when she received new ones, she wasn’t completely sure how to use them.  There was an learning period for her and those around her.  I sincerely enjoyed the give and take between Deva and her love interest, Padraig.  There were no egos involved and it was a true partnership.
Ms DeLeon’s writing style appealed to me.  I didn’t have trouble starting or staying interested in the story.  The descriptions and explanations made sense to me and it flowed well.  The author has a gift for writing about warriors.  The battle scenes and strategy involved are outstanding.  There was an ending to the story but enough of a tease to want to read the other books in the series.  Definitely looking forward to how Ms DeLeon advances the storyline in each new adventure.
I was initially torn on my rating.  I was gonna give it a 3 and move on but the more I thought about it, know there are upcoming books to be released, I’m taking my own advice and putting my faith in the author.
