Dear Reader,
Gracious me, my beautiful daughter Rocky sure could use my help. I always knew she wasn’t much interested in the local boys – but who’d have thought she’d come home with English royalty?
Trouble is, Hugh wants to buy some of our folks’ land. We don’t want to sell, but Rocky’s job depends on her closing the deal. And though Hugh’s obviously smitten, I’m not sure he’s right for my Rocky. Oh, he’s classy and handsome – and you should’ve seen the way he judged pies and fixed stock cars at our Watermelon Festival – but what do we know about him, really? I know I sound like a nervous mother hen, but after forty happy years with my Elbert, all I want is to see my little girl find the same.
Well, time for me to quit chattering and get back to Miss Bray’s wet set. Always nice talking to you, and remember: the Cut ‘n Curl’s got hot rollers, free coffee, and the best gossip in town.
See you real soon,
Ruby Rhodes
First off I’ll say I LOVE “Southern” books. I think I lived in a bayou or a small beach house/cottage in a small southern town in a past life or something. When I saw Welcome to Last Chance, I’d never heard of Hope Ramsay BUT….when I picked it up to read the synopsis I didn’t even have to read it. At the top, it says “Welcome to Last Chance, South Carolina”. Set in the South? Yup, that did it. I bought the book! I really liked it, as did I like the 2nd in the series, Home at Last Chance so there was no doubt that I’d buy Last Chance Beauty Queen when it came out.
Rocky Rhodes fled Last Chance as fast as she could after the fiasco at the Watermelon Festival when she was 18. She goes to college, and ends up working as the administrator in U.S. Senator Rupert Warren’s main office. Her next goal: a job in his Capitol Hill office in Washington, DC. One problem. The Senator assigns her to handle Hugh DeBracy (English Royalty)….that happens to want to build a textile plant…on her Father’s land. She has to successfully make everyone involved (the Senator, the Baron, & her Father) happy in order to prove to the Senator that she is the one to choose for the job!
Hugh DeBracy, Baron of Woolham wants to break family tradition of marrying for money. He wants to build his factory in Last Chance, where his now MIA partner has already bought a piece of land. One problem. He needs more land. Specifically, the land adjacent to his. Hugh makes Rocky bring him to Last Chance during the Watermelon Festival, something she has avoided since the fiasco, to talk to her Father and the locals in hopes of convincing them to sell him the land.
Rocky is mortified to bring Hugh to Last Chance, assuming he will turn his nose up at the small town and people in it. She turns out to be wrong. There are lots of surprises in Last Chance Beauty Queen. Festivals, fights, romance, angels. Angels? Yes, angels. You have to read the book(s) to understand. Overall, another good book from Hope. Definitely a light read. It isn’t a “read in one sitting because you can’t put it down” book, but I did finish in 2-3 days. I’ll be reading Stone’s story when Last Chance Christmas comes out at the end of the year!
I give Last Chance Beauty Queen 3 1/2 Heels.
**One silly note to add: all of Hugh’s parts in the book, I read in the accent of Hugh Grant. Not sure why, but to me, its what he sounded like! 😉

I totally get the south thing. I think it’s the food… and the legendary southern hospitality.
And the food.
I’ll have to pick up the series
The hospitality may be lagging a bit, but we’re always ready to feed an army.
The book sounds interesting, in a good way.
LOL! Right?!? The food, the MANNERS, the oceans, the bayous. Love it all! 😉 (Although, I’m SURE I’d be cursing the humidity & mosquitoes)!
