REVIEW by @GinnyLurcock : Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Promise Part I by Gene Luen Yang

The wait is over! Ever since the conclusion of Avatar: The Last Airbender, its millions of fans have been hungry for more–and it’s finally here!
This series of digests rejoins Aang and friends for exciting new adventures, beginning with a faceoff against the Fire Nation that threatens to throw the world into another war, testing all of Aang’s powers and ingenuity!
I really love the show “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” like really love, like super duper love, so when I found a graphic novel up on Netgalley, I snapped it up.  I kind of wish I hadn’t.

“The Promise: Part 1” takes place right after the show and contains all the characters you love, so you would think it would be awesome, right?  I mean… the show was a cartoon, so that must translate into a comic seamlessly, right?  Wrong.  All the quirkiness you love about the show made it to the page, but in a way that makes things seem jumpy and disjointed.  It’s like watching a streaming video that hasn’t buffered so the feed stutters.

I thought for a bit that it might be because I hadn’t read comics in awhile.  Probably user error, so I opened another comic ARC I’d received in a world I knew nothing about, and a page in I already liked it more than I did after reading all of the promise.

I think the best way to describe it is that it’s like when you’re watching a show and they use stop motion drawing for a scene, usually with poor drawings to illustrate some doomed from the start ill conceived plan.  It’s funny for a scene in a show, and makes you laugh, but for an entire comic?  Well, it fell far short of its mark.

I gave “Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Promise Part 1” 1.5 stars.  Read it if you ABSOLUTELY MUST KNOW have to know what happens after the show, but I’d recommend using your imagination instead.

And if you are having trouble with that allow me to help… after the story Aang and Co. come to your house and you ride the sky bison while chasing the kids who were mean to you until they’re forced to jump into a garbage can to escape…  What?  I never claimed to be original…

  1. We LOVED the cartoon as a family too. Then watched the movie version… DON’T DO IT! Bummer about the book too. 🙁

Agreed. My grand kids did not like the movie, but really liked the t.v. show.
