INTERVIEW by M.J. Fletcher: Edgar Magnus of the Mapmaker’s Union (@fletch125)

Message from Jena:  As part of his blog tour, M.J. Fletcher has stopped by today to do a character interview!

My name is MJ Fletcher and I am the writer of The Doorknob Society Saga. I’m sitting in the Cape Beanery in Cape May, NJ. It’s a rather balmy night waiting for my interview subject to arrive, Edgar Magnus of The Mapmakers Union. One of the supporting, and it must be said, most popular characters in The Doorknob Society. Val has brought me a cup of her special blend of coffee and has been bending my ear with nonstop chatter ever since. “Edgar really is rather odd, I mean he is nice and all in his own way. But odd like a square peg in a round hole type.” She smiles in spite of her self and is busily playing with her curly hair as she speaks to me.

The bells above the door ring and a group of customers walk in and head for the counter, forcing Val to return to work. Following them in is a young man with messy brown hair and a pair of goggles shoved into it. He has a satchel over his shoulder that looks as if it has been through a war zone. And out of every available corner protrudes some type of paper or writing device. He looks around the Beanery and seeing Val waves and smiles at her, she grins back and points in my direction. He walks over dropping down into the booth seat opposite of me.

Q: Edgar good to finally see you. (I check my watch and it shows 9:30) I thought we were meeting at 8?

A: (Edgar looks down at his own wrist and flips open what looks like a leather bracer. A set of hands is spinning around a series of planets and he looks at it as if it is the most normal thing in the world.) I see the problem I had my time set to the Pantheon Dimension of Exeter twelve. It’s eight o’clock there.

Q: Well let’s get to it, shall we? How is it you became a Mapmaker?

A: Well that’s a dumb question.

Q: Excuse me?

A: Like I said dumb question. I mean almost every member of my family is a Mapmaker, even my sister. The only member I can think of who isn’t, is my Uncle Harold. Major disappointment to the family.

Q: So he had no abilities then?

A: Oh no he had abilities.

Q: But you said he wasn’t a Mapmaker?

A: He wasn’t, he was a Detective Inspector with HVO. My grandmother is still upset about it. Why would you want to talk about my weird Uncle Harold and my grandmother anyway?

Q: I didn’t, I was just, oh never mind. Could you maybe explain to people who haven’t read the Books what a Mapmaker is exactly?

A: A Mapmaker is a transdimensional cartographer of the Universe.

Q: Um, what’s that now?

A: What that is a very basic break down of how my abilities work. What do you want me to say, I draw universal maps of multiple dimensions that show the best paths for people who can access portals like Doorknob Society members to walk through.

Q: You’re right the other answer was better.

A: I told you.

Q: Let’s try something simple. How did you become friends with Chloe Masters the main character of the books?

A: I met her through her dad. (Edgar proceeds to pull a map out of his satchel and unfurl it on the table)

Q: Can you maybe elaborate on that?

A: It’s all in Book 1; people should really just read that it tells the whole story. I mean why wouldn’t you know that I thought you wrote the books? You aren’t very good at this are you?

Q: I did write the books, I am just trying to give the fans some background here. You’ve turned out to be a very popular character and they want to know more about you. Is there anything you’d like them to know?

A: Well I’m not really fond of apples.

Q: What?

A: Apples, I don’t particularly like them. They’re all shiny and red and in your face I don’t like them.

Q: But what does that have to do with the books?

A: Nothing at all, you didn’t ask about the books. I mean really you are terrible at this you know. Can’t they get someone who knows what they’re doing for this?

Q: I give up. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A: (Edgar looks down at the map and is smiling, his finger traces along a route that keeps changing to a building that keeps disappearing. The name underneath says The Tavern at the End of Time) Now this looks like a place that could be a lot of fun.

Q: What does that have to do with anything? I throw my hands up in the air as Edgar looks up from his Map and cricks his neck regarding me.

A: Do you not know anything… I mean really.
