Martin Tucker is a working-class average Joe from New Jersey who lives a simple life: husband to his high school sweetheart, father to two young sons, and retainer of a ton of bills, even though most months the mortgage gets paid on time. It may not be the ultimate realization of the American Dream, but Martin’s gotten comfortable with it, and he’ll take what he can. That is, until new neighbors Johnny and Rachel Outlaw move in two doors down, and everything changes.
Johnny’s the youngest partner at a high-powered Manhattan law firm, and Rachel is probably the hottest woman Martin’s ever seen. For the life of him, Martin can’t figure out what people like the Outlaws are doing in this quiet suburban neighborhood. But as Martin tries to uncover the truth, Johnny Outlaw shows him a devil of a good time and Rachel captivates him with her irresistible beauty and charm—right before everything starts heading straight to hell….
Outlaw Among Us was a book that Simon & Schuster’s new eBook imprint Pocket Star requested that I review. I was instantly intrigued. First, Nathan Dodge is a pen name for a “popular best-selling thriller author”. Without knowing who the author was, that caught my attention right off. Whoever the mystery author is, he/she is incredibly talented. I admit, I Googled but I came up with nothing. As of right now, I have no clue who the mystery author is. Second, the synopsis. I read through that synopsis and immediately wanted to read more! And boy, am I happy I did.
It’s been a long time since I have read a good mystery. I mean, there are lots of great mystery authors out there. Stuart Woods is one of my favorites but the thing I found in reading his material is although all of his books are entertaining, I start to feel like I am reading the same book over and over again after a while. None of his plots are terribly memorable. I like them a lot but but no one book of his stands out among the rest. They all sort of blend together. This is not the case with Outlaw Among Us.
From the very first page, I was TOTALLY hooked. The main character of this book, Martin, is your Average Joe. He’s got an average job, an average house, and an average wife. Then he meets Johnny Outlaw, he relatively new neighbor and Johnny flips his world upside down. By far, one of the most intriguing characters I have ever read! Johnny is a character that you just cant get a grasp on. He’s charismatic, successful, smooth and utterly reckless. He’s basically as remarkable as Martin is not.
From the first time they spend any significant amount of time together, Johnny gets Martin wrapped up in a string of messes. Martin spends the book trying to decipher whether Johnny is his savior or his damnation.
Outlaw Among Us was a total page burner. The opening chapter sucks you in and keeps you guessing all the way to the end. Just when you think you have everything figured out, hang on because this author will look at you with a smile as he tears your theories to itty bitty shreds.
Ugh! And THE ENDING!! This book has The Cliffhanger From Hell so be prepared.
Overall, I am giving Outlaw Among Us a solid 5 stars. Must read!! When you sit down to read this book, make sure you’re in a comfortable chair because you’re not going to want to put it down!! Full of twists and turns, left and right, you’ll be amazed by the wild ride Outlaw Among Us takes you on! I don’t know who this mystery author is but I wish I did because I would love to check out his/her other titles.

I am reading this book right now and I am just not feeling the same vibe you did for this book. It utterly drives me crazy, a part of me wants to finish it and the other part just wants to quit reading. I am just not wrapped up in it. Johnny drives me crazy and Martin to me is just stupid, can he really not see what is going on…it drives me crazy. I am over 60% finished and so I am really trying to finish because I am curious but knowing that it has a cliff hanger now is not helping. 🙁 I am glad you liked it though. 🙂
