REVIEW by Heather: The Demon Lover by Juliet Dark (@_shoe_girl_)

Since accepting a teaching position at remote Fairwick College in upstate New York, Callie McFay has experienced the same disturbingly erotic dream every night: A mist enters her bedroom, then takes the shape of a virile, seductive stranger who proceeds to ravish her in the most toe-curling, wholly satisfying ways possible. Perhaps these dreams are the result of her having written the bestselling book The Sex Lives of Demon Lovers. Callie’s lifelong passion is the intersection of lurid fairy tales and Gothic literature—which is why she’s found herself at Fairwick’s renowned folklore department, living in a once-stately Victorian house that, at first sight, seemed to call her name.

But Callie soon realizes that her dreams are alarmingly real. She has a demon lover—an incubus—and he will seduce her, pleasure her, and eventually suck the very life from her. Then Callie makes another startling discovery: Her incubus is not the only mythical creature in Fairwick. As the tenured witches of the college and the resident fairies in the surrounding woods prepare to cast out the demon, Callie must accomplish something infinitely more difficult—banishing this supernatural lover from her heart.

Ok, I know all reviews are opinions, but I really can’t even “review” this book.  All I can offer is a straight up, generalized opinion.

When I saw this book on NetGalley, I LOVED the cover, and the synopsis sounded good, so I requested it.    I hate to say that the cover is the only thing I enjoyed about the book.  It started off really slow; so much though that I started and stopped it several times, and even finished two books in between.  It just couldn’t grab my attention, so I skipped to halfway through, then proceeded to skip to the end.  I figured in doing that, I’d see story-line that would intrigue me enough to go back and give the book ANOTHER chance.  Sorry to say, it didn’t happen.  I truly wish it did, as what I did read was written really well and most other reviews I see are raving about how good the book is.  I just couldn’t get into it.  Perhaps that is because there is a “Faerie” story-line and that does not interest me in the least.  Even on one of my FAV shows (True Blood), I don’t like the Faerie aspect.

But, if you like demons, faeries, vampires, and other supernatural/gothic creatures, I’d def say to give this one a try!

  1. Hi Heather! Totally agreeing with you on that (several) points actually, I kinda craved that book (because of the cover and the blurb) and ask for it too on NetGalley last year (!?) I was so happy to get it and as I begun to read it, couldn’t jump into the action and did the same thing: put it down, read something else, take it back but couldn’t read much more. I LOVE paranormal romance, vampires, demons, witches even fairies but don’t really know why, this one didn’t blown me away (at all…) Thanks for sharing 😛

    1. I am SO glad to hear that! Well, not glad that you didn’t enjoy the book, but glad someone agrees!! I always feel terrible writing “bad” reviews.

  2. Thank you for an honest review! I have read a few books that I just can’t get into. I usually read a book or two a day so if it takes me more than a day or two to get into it, I toss it in the DNF pile.
