The lovely folks at Berkley/NAL (Imprint of Penguin Group) contacted me about doing a review of Hunting Daylight. I went into it a little leary only because it is the second book in a series and I hadn’t read book one. However, the publicist assured me that the books in this series do great as stand alone novels so I decided to give it a shot.
Right off the bat, I was intrigued. The book opens with a scientist headed to the uncharted Amazon rainforest in Gabon and two things quickly become obvious. First, he’s been brought to the jungle for a much different reason than he was told. Second, there’s a chance he wont walk back out.
Hunting Daylight is INTENSE from the very first page! I was immediately hooked and proceeded to burn through this book in no time. There are several story arcs running at once in this book and the author writes in such a fashions that you never lose track of what is going on and all of the story arcs are intertwined so each segment provides you with a little nugget that plays into the next. It makes for one big story that flows perfectly.
The only thing I didn’t like about Hunting Daylight was the last two pages. I become so invested in one story arc in particular and it did NOT end the way I wanted it to. *smiles* Totally not held against the author but I was a little heart broken.
The real thing that I felt hurt Hunting Daylight a bit was the first 50% of this book contains some of the worst sexual frustration I have ever encountered in a book. As someone who reads a LOT of urban fantasy/paranormal romance, I am used to sex scenes and almost sex scenes being sprinkled throughout the book. My problem with this book was the almost sex scenes went so far, and there are a few of them prior to these two characters finally throwing down, that it was kind of distracting. Like to the point of tab a was inserted into slot b and then………………it just……………..wasn’t. It was actually distracting. And then I was baffled over the fact that I was distracted by a fictional character’s inability to seal the deal. Then I was distracted all over again.
With that being said (and my reader’s angst over the ending not wrapping up the way I thought it was going to), Hunting Daylight is an EXCELLENT book. Genuinely. I loved it enough that I plan to go back and read Acquainted With the Dark #1 at some point.
I definitely recommend this book. Hunting Daylight easily rocks 4.5 stars!
