REVIEW by Dolly: House Rules (Chicagoland Vampires #7) by Chloe Neill – Released 2/5 (@chloeneill , @fidget78)

In a city full of vampires, trouble never sleeps.

At the tender age of twenty-seven, Merit became a sword-wielding vampire. Since then, she’s become the protector of her House, watched Chicago nearly burn to the ground, and seen her Master fall and rise. Now she’ll see her mettle—and her metal—tested like never before.

It started with two . . . Two rogues vanishing without a trace. Someone is targeting Chicago’s vampires, and anyone could be next. With their house in peril, Merit and her Master, the centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, must race to stop the disappearances. But as they untangle a web of secret alliances and ancient evils, they realize their foe is more familiar, and more powerful, than they could have ever imagined.

And Merit’s adventures continue. Thanks goodness she has a lot of drama in her life, as Ms Neill can keep writing about it.
Standard warning here. You could read this as a stand alone but you would deprive yourself of 6 excellent novels. House Rules is the 7th installment in this series, so you would miss a lot.

Merit and Ethan are finally a couple. Yay!  Cadogan House is in the process of separating itself from the Presidium. The Council is on the way to dissolve their association with Cadogan House and to declare them Rogues. See, never a dull minute.

The Council is not going to make things easy and for additional drama 2 young Rogue vampires are missing.  The Rogues ask for help from Ethan and his team and Merit, as Sentinel, is in charge of the investigation. Much more is going on to increase the drama and tension but that would give too much of the storyline away.

Ms Neill’s Chicagoland Vampire Series is a fantastic Urban Fantasy series. House Rules is not my favorite of the series. The writing is tight and clean but the pacing was a bit off in my opinion. Parts seemed to drag and the tension I’m used to in this series was muted.

I enjoyed House Rules and it was needed to advance the series forward. I am looking forward to the next entry, Biting Bad, due out 6 August 2013. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Merit, Ethan and the crew.

My Rating:  4 Stars
