NEW RELEASE REVIEW by Jena: Night Broken (Mercy Thompson #8) by Patricia Briggs – Released 3/11! (@Mercys_Garage)

An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from a stalker. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.
Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the farthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.
Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s stalker is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.

What I Liked:
She’s back!! I adore this series and all of Mercy’s badassery. Although I enjoyed the last few books, I felt that they did slow down a bit once Mercy and Adam finally got together. However, we are now back to the awesomesauce urban fantasy that is the reason I fell in love with this series. The main mystery of the day is a BIG one in Night Broken and, as always, it’s woven perfectly.  The nature of the Big Bad is actually revealed pretty early in the book, but there are so many different story lines that cross in this book, it actually works really well.

I was going to put this in the ‘what I didn’t like’ section but it really doesn’t fit there as you’re not supposed to like it.  Christy.  I wanted to smack the shit out of Adam’s ex-wife as soon as the little wench shows up.  He’s not even mine and as soon as she started pulling her damsel in distress bullshit, my hackles went up on Mercy’s behalf.  I got very territorial and I was ready to tear her apart.  Yes, a fictional character, I know, but read the book.  You’ll totally be right there with me.  There were a few “Oh no she didn’t” moments, but dont worry.  Mercy handles her business in her own way.  *wink wink*
Although it has no sway on the story, I wanted to point out that GORGEOUS cover.  THAT is an urban fantasy cover to be proud of!!  I love it!  As soon as I saw it, I was DYING to read the book.  One thing I cant stand is the mention throughout this series of Mercy not being beautiful.  It’s irritating.  Not that I want her to be all “I’m so hot” (said in the Paris Hilton voice that sounds like she’s rocked on quaaludes) but some confidence in her appearance would be nice.  I dont know about you guys but the Mercy on that cover is HOT.  I think the only covers from this series that come close to being just as hot are Bone Crossed and River Marked.  Luckily, her tatas have stopped inflating since River Marked.  If they had kept going, I think we would be reading about her self-inflicted black eye problem.  I mean, REALLY.  Look at the size of those things on the cover for Bood Bound, then look at them on the cover for River Marked.  Ok…..I am not obsessing over a fictional character’s knockers.

What I Didn’t Like:
Something I have noticed a lot since Adam and Mercy finally hooked up is their flirting has become………..I dont even know how to describe it.  Cheesy?  It sounds forced, not sexual.  I would love to see some of that heat come back to their relationship.  That is the only hiccup I really found in this book.  The rest is written as frikkin flawless urban fantasy.

Who I Would Recommend This Book To:
If you are a fan of urban fantasy, REAL urban fantasy, this is a series you’d love.  It’s similar to the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews.  Solid urban fantasy with its own niche.  The world building on these two series is TOTALLY different, but they are similar in that their respective worlds are so unique.  If you haven’t read the Mercy Thompson series up to this point, I highly recommend going back to the beginning.  It’s a great series but if you dont start at the beginning, you’re missing out on some great back story!  And the courtship between Adam and Mercy is fantastic!
