When I read A Vampire’s Promise recently, I totally fell in love with the story and the characters. A Vampire’s Soul is the sequel to that book and I couldn’t wait to continue the story that ended with quite the cliffhanger.
What I liked about this book:
My favorite characters, Rowan, Gabriel and Rowan’s best friend, Laycee are all back for this book. This time around I wasn’t as happy with Rowan. She makes some really stupid moves and while it moved the story along, it was just a surprise that the author would make a character that was so smart and snarky in the first book, be so not smart in this one. And Gabriel is almost as bad this time. The evil Katja is still around and Gabriel leaves Rowan unguarded when he really should have known better. So while I love Rowan and Gabriel, that love is mainly a hold over from the first book. I am not trying to be confusing, but due to spoilers I can’t say too much. Suffice it to say, this book wasn’t exactly the page turner the last one was, and that was almost completely due to the bad moves by the two main characters. I put this in the like category, because I do still like the characters.
The other thing I liked was Rowan’s reaction to Gabriel being a vampire. So many books have the main character accept the supernatural element so easy that it was refreshing to see how she suffers. I do think she suffered a bit too long but at least it was more real then most other books in this respect.
What I didn’t like about this book:
Unfortunately, I would have to say a big part of the story goes in this category for me, this time. Taking the story into another realm didn’t work for me. While the villain, or in this case demon, was well written, the whole part he was in just wasn’t that good of a read for me. I can honestly say I am still a bit confused with that whole part. It wasn’t a cohesive explanation for what was going on in the story and it was a bit hard to read for me. I am really sorry about this because the first book was just so well written and engaging.
I know that Rowan, as a Vampire’s Promise, needed an explanation of what that meant, so I understand why it had to be written, it just wasn’t the way I wanted the story to go and that’s just my personal taste. And like I said before, it was confusing for me.

Anyone that read the first book. If you haven’t read it, then this book would definitely not be for you!
I wanted to love this book. I really did. I am glad that I read it and that I did enjoy parts of it. But I was left wishing that it had been just a bit better.
