REVIEW by Lorna: The Pact by Karina Halle (@Metalblonde , @Mollykatie112)

The PactIt all started with a pinky swear…

Linden McGregor is tall, rugged, and gunslinger handsome; a helicopter pilot with a Scottish brogue and charm to spare. He’s also one of Stephanie Robson’s best friends and has fit into that box for as long as she’s known him.

Beautiful, funny and an ambitious businesswoman (with one hell of an ass), Stephanie Robson is one of Linden McGregor’s best friends and has fit into that box for as long as he’s known her.

But some relationships can’t be boxed, can’t be classified, can’t be tamed.

Back in their mid-twenties and tired of the competitive hit-or-miss dating scene of San Francisco, Steph and Linden made a pact to marry each other if neither one of them were in a serious relationship by the time they hit thirty.

It sounded like fun and games at the time but as the years to thirty tick past and lovers come and go out of their lives, the pact becomes larger than life.

Sex is inevitable. Friendships are tested. Hearts are on the line.

The pact is about to change everything.

Note: due to the dirty talk and sexy times, The Pact is not meant for anyone under the age of 18. All characters in THE PACT are in their thirties, therefore this is NOT a new adult book…even though love can mess you up at any age.

Karina Halle. I fell in love with her writing after being introduced to her Experiment in Terror series. If you haven’t read it, you really should. Wonderful romance, characters, even humor, all wrapped around the supernatural. I am one of her fans that has loved all her books, although I still haven’t read her Artist Trilogy. I bought this book awhile back, actually when it first came out. I then bought the second, The Offer, and more recently,The Play. Up until now, I hadn’t read them. My tbr pile is ridiculous. Each of these books could standalone, but each feature a different brother in the McGregor family. Yes, these brothers are from Scotland, but now live in America.

When Stephanie and Lachlan were twenty five, Lachlan made a pact with her, that if they aren’t married or with anyone at thirty, that they would marry each other. Lachlan is totally serious, while Steph thinks he is joking. That’s because Lachlan is Stephanie’s best friend. Their other best friend is James, who Steph once dated back when she was twenty one. It’s pretty obvious that James has never gotten over her. James owns a bar where they, and all their other friends, hang out. The book follows the three main characters through the next five years. All the life changes, the many relationships, all the highs and lows. It jumps ahead at times, to the next birthday, so it’s not bogged down with the day to day of the five years. The reader knows early on that Lachlan has a thing for Steph, and we also learn that Steph reciprocates-neither having any intention of doing anything about it. Ah, the best laid plans… Can best friends become lovers? Sure, we read about that all the time. But throw in another character, James, one that will be extremely hurt by anything Lachland and Stephanie do together, and you have this story.

I adored both of the main characters. Stephanie is beautiful, caring, intelligent, ambitious, with a heart as big as Texas. Lachlan is all of those things as well. They are good people, both of whom had some bad things in their past-especially Lachlan. Lachlan’s parents aren’t exactly the best. James, I wasn’t a big fan of. He ended up being pretty selfish, and self centered.

As usual with anything this author writes, I read it extremely fast. You know the type of read that keeps you up all night? Yes, that is what this one was for me. It’s of course, well written(a given for anything she writes) and the sexual scenes are extremely intense and detailed. And did I mention they were intense? Wow. Just wow.

I recommend this book to all adult contemporary romance readers. I will be reading The Offer, probably sooner rather than later-I can’t believe I let this one sit so long in my Kindle unread!

I have this one waiting on my kindle, Lorna. Actually, I have several of Halle’s waiting to be read. A book that will keep me up all night, with great characters, and intense smexy scenes though, deserves to be moved up in priority. 😉

I definitely recommend it and I think you will enjoy. I read the second one and loved it as well. The Play(the 3rd one) is probably twice as long as these and I will get to it soon hopefully!
