REVIEW by Jena: Magic Shifts (Kate Daniels #8) by Ilona Andrews (@ilona_andrews)

Magic ShiftsIn the latest Kate Daniels novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews, magic is coming and going in waves in post-Shift Atlanta—and each crest leaves danger in its wake…
After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate—former Beast Lord Curran Lennart—are adjusting to a very different pace. While they’re thrilled to escape all the infighting, Kate and Curran know that separating from the Pack completely is a process that will take time.
But when they learn that their friend Eduardo has gone missing, Kate and Curran shift their focus to investigate his disappearance. Eduardo was a fellow member of the Mercenary Guild, so Kate knows the best place to start looking is his most recent jobs. As Kate and Curran dig further into the merc’s business, they discover that the Guild has gone to hell and that Eduardo’s assignments are connected in the most sinister way…
An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it—before it takes their city apart piece by piece.

I took sooooooo long in finally reading this installment of one of my favorite series.  A big part of that was the disclaimer at the beginning of Magic Breaks, the 7th installment in the Kate Daniels series, stating that the book reads like the end of the series but it isn’t.  It really did read that way, and the last few series I’ve been through that had a book that felt like the end generally SUCKED beyond that point.  I was seriously afraid that was going to happen here.
Not at all.
Right out of the gate, we are greeted with a sucker punch to the gut when something happens with Kate.  I’m not going to get into details, but I will tell you all it’s not good, and there isn’t a damn thing anyone could have or can do about it.  There is nothing like the helpless feeling when something is happening and there is nothing you can do to change it one way or the other.  As the reader, you feel every second of the scene.
Seeing Kate and Curran in their new capacity is kind of refreshing.  Things with the pack are not wrapped up neatly with a bow, but they’re trying to learn to get on with their lives with newly found freedom on one hand and brand new restrictions on another.  It seems like no matter what way they turn, they have to figure out this lopsided balancing act.  I was beginning to find it frustrating at times throughout the series.  I think the change in story direction really illustrates that the balancing act will carry on no matter where Kate goes because who she is plays a large role in it.  I think this book painted that picture clearer for her than any other.
Overall, I think I like the way the series has shifted.  I felt like the series-long story arc up to this point had really started to feel drawn out.  I think the authors saw that and new it needed new direction.  Without feeling like a totally different series, it appears they’ve certainly given this one a second wind.  I cant wait for the next book to come out and I wont be waiting eight months to read it this time.
