The city returns to normal when the sun rises in the morning, and no one can capture the strange changes–such as potholes turning into toothy mouths and wires turning into strangling vines–on film, which prompts the government to declare that the city has been infected with some kind of madness and must be quarantined. Meanwhile, venturing out of one’s house at night has become a dangerous proposition, and the moment the sun sets, most of the citizens of the city shut themselves up in their houses and stay there even in the case of dire emergencies.
The magic is openly hostile to most mortals, but there are some individuals it seems to covet, trying to lure them out into the night. While Becket struggles to protect her friends and family from predatory creatures of the night, she is constantly tempted to shrug off all her responsibilities and join them. Joining the night world means being free of not just responsibility, but conscience, and it means no longer caring about the fate of others.

Horror for the teen reader? Personally, I think this book would have scared the stuffing out of me back in those days for me. And that’s because this book scared the stuffing out of me even now as an adult. While horror isn’t my usual go to these days, unless it’s dystopian and zombies, this book fascinated me.
Becket, or Becks as she is called, is a seventeen year old introvert, just trying to make her way in Philadephia. Her parents are newly divorced, and she lives with her police commissioner father. One night, while walking her dog, she comes across what she thinks is an abandoned baby, only it was definitely not what she thought. Well that was it for me, I couldn’t put this book down.
Becket is pretty great as a character. She’s super smart, and on the fast track for the Ivy League. Her best(and only)friend is Piper. Piper is rich, beautiful, popular, and not near as smart. She has a way of getting Becket into trouble when they are are together. Luke is Piper’s boyfriend, and Becket’s neighbor and crush. Becket’s dad is a strict and overprotective, perfect for setting up Becket to rebel when it comes to Piper. After Becket’s run in with the “baby” things start going downhill fast in Philadelphia. Since her dad has to be at work through the crisis, Becket finds herself alone in the scariest situation possible. Evil has been unleashed and the city is under siege.
The body count is rising, and Becket seems to be right in the middle of everything. As in the epicenter of it all. The atmosphere the author created was eerie, to say the least. When Becket is out alone in the middle of a dark foggy night and something starts chasing her? I was on the edge of my seat. The reader can’t help but get caught up in this excellent story of a girl living in the middle of a nightmare.
This was literally one of the spookiest book I have ever read, and I have read my share of horror in the distant past. This book sucked me in and I ended up reading it very quickly, and that’s because I had to know what was going to happen. I didn’t realize that it wasn’t a standalone, but the closer I got to the end, I knew it couldn’t all be over. And it’s not. For me(and probably for anyone), it was a pretty gigantic cliffhanger, and now I can’t wait until the next one is released.
Good characters, a sweet start to a romance, and a spooky premise all added up to a great read. All I can say to the author is, Well Done! Recommended to older teens 16+ to adult, due to some extreme violence.
