Books by Colleen Hoover are some of the best contemporary romance books to be found, in my opinion. Of course I have other favorite authors that I do love as well. But for the sake of this review, keep in mind that I adore everything I have ever read by this author. And now that I follow her on Instagram, I love her even more. She is in one word-hilarious-and makes me laugh at her antics on a regular basis. So is this book a romantic comedy? Not even close, and so far all of her work has been very emotional and drama filled. This book was no exception and easily ranks among the top four or five books that I have read this year.
On the occasion of her father’s funeral. Lily Bloom meets Ryle Kincaid on a rooftop. They proceed to have one of the most honest conversations they have ever had with anyone. That’s the start to a relationship between a neurosurgeon that swears he will never marry, as his job means everything, and a young woman who grew up in an abusive home. For the first time, Ryle falls in love with someone that matters. On Lily’s part, she hasn’t been in love since high school. But these two establish a relationship and it’s not long until things start to change.
I actually liked the character of Lily a lot. She’s trying to live her dream by opening her own florist shop, and also by having a wonderful relationship. She loves her mother, but blames her for never kicking her abusive father out, and for staying. Ryle is all about his job, but he loves Lily almost obsessively. The opposite of what he always thought he wanted for his life. Of course, there are other characters in this read, and I did enjoy getting to know these characters as well. My problem was with Ryle. But, he was exactly as the author meant him to be, so I can not find fault with that. At times I did really like him, other times not so much. A character from Lily’s past actually became my favorite character in this book.
Because of spoilers, I don’t want to go into too many details. There is a very real problem in this relationship and this is not a happy book by any means. It kept me turning pages and at the same time kept me worried for the characters all through the read. How could there ever be a happily ever after for this couple, is what I kept asking myself. Keep in mind, that people with certain triggers may have a problem with some aspects of this book.
This was one of those books that tells the story of the past, as well as what is happening now. Since LIly’s past is important, I really did enjoy that part, maybe even more so than the present.This might not have been an easy read, but I think it’s an important read, and I highly recommend it to both adult contemporary romance readers, as well as literary fiction readers. At this time, it is up for contemporary romance of the year on GoodReads, and Ms. Hoover won in that category last year with, Confess. Her books are always way more than just a romance, they make you think,question things, and in some cases are about difficult subjects, as this one is. If you want a simple romance, this isn’t it. But if you want a fully realized romance/drama based on lives with real problems, this could be the book you have been wanting, or even needing to read. Highly recommended!
