REVIEW: Dreamfever (Fever Series #4) by Karen Marie Moning (@KarenMMoning)

They may have stolen my past, but I’ll never let them take my future.
When the walls between Man and Fae come crashing down, freeing the insatiable, immortal Unseelie from their icy prison, MacKayla Lane is caught in a deadly trap. Captured by the Fae Lord Master, she is left with no memory of who or what she is: the only sidhe-seer alive who can track the Sinsar Dubh, a book of arcane black magic that holds the key to controlling both worlds.
Clawing her way back from oblivion is only the first step Mac must take down a perilous path, from the battle-filled streets of Dublin to the treacherous politics of an ancient, secret sect, through the tangled lies of men who claim to be her allies into the illusory world of the Fae themselves, where nothing is as it seems—and Mac is forced to face a soul-shattering truth.

Who do you trust when you can’t even trust yourself?

So, yeah, this series just keeps getting better and better.

As I said going into this series of reviews, I have formulated theory after theory after theory and every single one of them has been so unbelievably wrong!  In my eyes, that’s a fantastic thing.  100% unpredictable story lines.  A rare thing these days.  I expected this to be a fast read, run-of-the-mill series and so far, I am happy to report that I was so, so wrong.

Faefever, book #3 in the series, ended as all of its predecessors did – with a cliffhanger that must have been infuriating at the time it was published.  As I am reading them now with all 5 on the market, I don’t have to suffer through that.  *wink wink* The cliffhanger from Faefever was one that I couldn’t understand being able to return from.  Mac, having been captured by the Unseelie Princes and the L.M., was left as an empty, mindless, lust driven shell.  Pri-ya.  Naturally, Dreamfever picks up from that point on.  We are taken on a journey to pull Mac back from the edge of a seemingly hopeless oblivion.

I find myself in a horrible position at this point in the series.  I was discussing this pending review with our very own Ginny Lurcock this morning and I am still walking on eggshells.  The issue that I run into is this – I can’t find the words to describe this book without giving away a billion HUGE spoilers.  Through writing and editing and editing….and more editing, you are reading the final version of this review, spoiler free.  I only hope that it tells you enough about this book to stress the point that if you love urban fantasy, YOU MUST READ THIS SERIES.

Characters…..let’s see.  Mac is Mac.  Well, sort of.  As with the preceding books in this series, I find that Mac is growing on me more and more.  I know that she’s the main character and I am supposed to love her but she’s had something there that has just rubbed me the wrong way for the first three books.  I can honestly say that I get it now.  I get why she started out as such a brainless tool.  It was so that we could appreciate the creature that she would turn into.  And I do now.  She’s awesome.

Next is Jericho Barrons.  Jericho, Jericho Jericho.  Where do I start with you?  You are someone I would love to get to know.  Jericho Barrons is a genuine enigma.  Every time I think I have him figured out, something happens that completely and totally tosses my theory out the window.  I’m totally ok with that though because the mystery surrounding Jericho Barrons is at least half the reason I can’t get enough of this series.  I need to know!  What ARE you?!?!?!  Only one more book to find out!!!  Luckily, Ms. Moning was nice enough to throw us a few bones in this installment of the series.  Although we don’t have the complete picture yet, the finished puzzle is definitely within reach.  However, that being said, I don’t think that we will ever know exactly what he is – I think we are just going to find out what he isn’t

V’Lane is….well, V’Lane.  He’s dodgy.  He’s sketchy.  I don’t think that he can be trusted one bit.  I just don’t know why right now.  Stay tuned on this one….

Dreamfever is one more step on this crazy adventure.  Each installment is better than the last.  Action, adventure, horror, comedy, romance, terror, monsters, superheroes.  It’s got it all.  And what Fever series installment would be complete without the ever present cliffhanger.  Dreamfever has a HUGE CLIFFHANGER that will SHOCK you out of your mind.  I could not imagine having to wait got the last installment when this was originally published!  I would have gone completely insane.  Period.  The end.  Check me into a mental ward for a year.

I am super excited for the last installment of this series.  Karen Marie Moning has jumped to the top of my list of favorite urban fantasy authors with record speed!  She’s a wonderful author with a seriously twisted imagination.  I love her for that.

Overall, I give Dreamfever an ecstatic 5 stars!!!  It’s dark.  It’s sexy.  It’s edgy.  It’ll make you fall over laughing right before it kicks you in the unmentionables and leaves you hysterically crying on the sidewalk.  Read it.  Read it!  READ IT!!!

  1. I am totally interested in seeing your review on the 5th book. I loved, ok, still love this series but the last book, although it had great parts, p’ed me off to no end. Cannot wait to see what you think, though.

    1. Well, stay tuned. That review will publish tomorrow morning at 8am EST. *wink wink*
