REVIEW by Jena: Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress Series #1) by Jeaniene Frost (@jeaniene_frost_)

Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father–the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.

In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner–are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her new found status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

OH EMMMMMM GEEEEEEEE!!!! This book was AWESOME!!!

A little back ground: I started out reading Jeaniene Frosts’s work with First Drop of Crimson, the first book in the Night Huntress World series, a spin-off of the Night Huntress Series. When I purchased First Drop, I didn’t realize that there were 2 different series. I read through the two that are published to that series (stand alone novels rather than a continuing story arc with the same characters) and decided that I wanted to give the original series a shot. That brings us to Halfway to the Grave.

I was already semi-familiar with the characters of Bones and Cat from First Drop and was rather excited to see where their story started. I was not disappointed in the slightest bit.

Cat is my hero. She’s a bad ass. She’s sassy. She just rocks with a coolness factor that is way far off the charts. Then there’s Bones. A sexy vamp who’s not exactly what she expected. He’s got a flawless sense of humor and he knows how to use it. The chemistry between these two characters is just incredible. On top of being a book junkie, I am also a movie buff. One thing I absolutely hate in movies is a lack of chemistry between the actors. Some people just have it and some people just don’t. Take Brad Pitt, for example. He and Gwyneth Paltrow were mediocre at best in the movie Se7en. Did they act well together? Sure but there was that certain spark missing. Now, take Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and those two SMOLDERED on screen. And I am not just talking about sexual heat. I mean the way they move together. The way they talk together. They just clicked and their ENTIRE audience could feel that instantly.

Cat and Bones have that!!! All of it!!! They genuinely SMOLDER together. They have the sexual chemistry but anyone can write sexual chemistry. What Cat and Bones have is rare in a book. Two characters whose initial interaction is based on hatred and a complete lack of trust blossoms into this incredible relationship. The difference? Jeaniene Frost made them friends before she made them bed mates. Friendship like that is RARE in a love story. Usually the tension in their pelvic parts keeps that friendship from happening first. I absolutely LOVED it. The scenes that they have together bounce from hilarious to sweet and the next thing you know, they’re side by side kicking some ass together. The hilarious parts in this book literally had me laughing my ass off as I listened (I did this one as an audio book) and on a number of occasions, my boss came over to my desk to make sure I was OK. It was absolutely wonderful!!

Bones is a great character all by himself too. He’s dashing. He’s funny. He’s the full package….if you can get by the whole living off of blood thing. And who doesn’t love a man with an accent??

Overall, I give Half Way to the Grave 5 sets of fangs!!! This series has promise to be AMAZING from start to finish and I cant wait to finish out the ride.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go because I have already started book 2 in the series and I am DYING to know what happens!
