REVIEW by Jena: Bossypants by Tina Fey (@tinafey)

Before Liz Lemon, before “Weekend Update,” before “Sarah Palin,” Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV.

She has seen both these dreams come true.

At last, Tina Fey’s story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon — from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.

Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we’ve all suspected: you’re no one until someone calls you bossy.

I needed something funny to read so I decided to give Bossypants a chance.  I happen to love Tina Fey and had been eyeballing this book for a while now.  I ended up listening to the audio book which comes with a PDF of pictures that she mentions throughout the audiobook and although there are some funny moments involving the pictures, they’re nothing compared to the rest of the book.

Bossypants is narrated by Tina herself and it is HILARIOUS.  I listened to it while I was working and my cubicle neighbor mentioned my excessive laughing more than once.  This book takes you from her early days in learning improve through being on SNL as a writer to 30 Rock.  From motherhood to her honeymoon debacle.

My favorite parts of this book are far too many to name.  I adored the story behind the first Sarah Palin bit!  The bit on SNL was hilarious as it was and hearing the story behind it was even better.  CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO!

However, the highlight of reading this book was toward the end.  Tina talks about being a better mother by finding some “me time”.  I took a rather large sip of my iced tea while listening to this part and proceeded to start laughing so hard that the iced tea went all over my desk and I’m pretty sure some came out of my nose.

Any expert will tell you the best thing any mom can do to be a better mom is to carve out a little “Me Time” for herself.  Here are some great “Me Time” activities you can do:

–  Go to the bathroom a lot.

–  Offer to empty the dishwasher

–   Take 90 minute showers.  If you only shower every 3 to 4 days, it’ll be easier to get away with this.

–  Say you’re going to look for the diaper cream and then go into your child’s room and just stand there.  Until you spouse comes in and curtly says “what are you doing?”

–  Stand over the sink and eat the rest of your child’s dinner while he or she pulls at your pant leg asking for it back.

–  Try to establish that you’re the only one in your family allowed to go to the post office.

–  Sleep when your baby sleeps.  Everyone knows this classic tip but I say why stop there?  Scream when your baby screams.  Take Benadryl when you baby takes Benadryl.  Walk around pantless when you baby walks around pantless.  Poop in the bath tub when they poop in the bath tub.

–  Read.  When your baby is finally down for the night, pick up a juicy book like ‘Eat, Pray. Love’ or ‘Pride and Prejudice’ or my personal favorite ‘Understanding Sleep Disorders: Narcolepsy and Apnea, a Clinical Study’.  Taking some time to read each night really taught me how to feign narcolepsy when my husband asked me what my plan was for taking down the Christmas tree.

Just implementing 4 or 5 of these little techniques will prove restorative and give you the energy you need to not drink until night time.

Overall, I give Bossypants 4.5 stars!  A damn funny read containing some serios (and delivered as only Tina Fey could) wisdomy pearls.
