Anxious to leave her destructive past behind, Amelia Caldwell moves to Willowberg, excited for a fresh start. Once there, she discovers that her birthmark is more than it seems. She has been marked by a vampire’s soul. Not only does she hold his soul, but Amelia is also his soulmate.
After almost a century of searching for his soulmate, Mitchell Lang fears the worst–he is going to lose Amelia to another man. His heart takes over, and his impulsive decision to take away her free will and to intensify their bond quickly turns her growing love into hate.
When they become trapped in the emotional rollercoaster of their souls’ bond, open conflict erupts. Amelia has no intentions of belonging to anyone, not even her soulmate, and Mitchell refuses to let her go.
While she frantically searches for a way to escape his grasp, Amelia unlocks the painful memories of her past and uncovers a powerful secret. But before she has a chance to explore her newfound edge, she finds herself caught in the middle of a deadly game of revenge and is forced to realize that YOU CANNOT RUN FROM DESTINY.
I recently won a book in a GoodReads giveaway and it was part 2 of a series I had never heard of. So because I can’t stand to read books out of order, I went ahead and bought this book without really knowing anything about it. I have to say it was a pretty good read. I think it probably would be considered young adult.
Amelia is 18 and still in mourning/shock over the brutal murder of her parents years before that she witnessed but for some inexplicable reason survived. She wins an all paid scholarship to a private college and decides to go for it even though she is kind of afraid of the world in general and how she is treated when people find out about her past. She ends up living in what is described as a castle in a gated community with an assortment of people that run her benefactors business. She is treated like a member of the family-not someone who is poor and so new to the castle. Complete new wardrobe and all. She can’t believe her luck. Her benefactor stays out of the picture for the first part of the book-she thinks it’s business but really he is afraid for her to see him as he has been visiting her dreams for the past five years. Of course nothing is as it seems. Once she meets Mitch (her benefactor and soul mate) the story really takes off. The soul’s mark is a mark found only on a vampires soul mate. Due to a curse put on all vampires, Mitch has been searching for his soul mate for over four hundred years and even though he has found a version of her before, he lost her(in a really horrible way). Now he doesn’t want to scare her off. Amelia, or Millie as some call her, is totally shocked that she is living with a bunch of vampires, one of which(Eric)she has a crush on. But upon finally meeting Mitch, she is so drawn to him that she can’t stay away from him. And in the next minute she hates him for his lies and for biting her to keep her from straying from him. She goes back and forth through the whole book like this. Because she really does go to college, she meets other people, some of which become a big part of the story, Erin in particular. Erin has a soul mark and has been claimed by the bad guy. Yup there is always a bad guy. She becomes Amelia’s friend even though it means going against her soul mate who has sworn revenge against Mitch for an ancient wrong. And then there’s the fact that Amelia is a witch and doesn’t know it-that’s a whole other part of the story.
There is a lot going on in this book. A lot more then I have touched on here. Made it kind of hard to explain the story but I hope you can get a feel for what the book is about. The book is very readable with hardly a dull moment and lots of action. One thing I didn’t like was the name of the vampire soul mate being written next to the soul mark on the female after claiming. Kind of nit picky of me but seemed kind of crazy to me. I really didn’t like Mitch very much but I am hoping that will change. I wanted to shake Amelia silly a few times for her wishy washy behavior at times. If you are scared to death of the vampires, then find a way to leave already. If you really love Mitch then go for it. I know, I know, it’s all part of telling the story. The next book, The Soul’s Mark-Hunted arrived yesterday and I will definitely be reading it. Anyway, all that being said, I think I will give it 3.75 stars-better then a 3.5 but not as good as a 4 book for me.
