A great second installment to the True Calling series.

This story picks up on Earth with Ariana. She’s now faced with evidence that Cal may have betrayed her as well as an ever attentive ex-boyfriend who’s determined to win her back. Add to that a good dose of political intrigue, and she (and the reader) are left wondering who they can trust. It makes for a gripping read.

I must admit I love this story. It’s well-told with just enough info leaking out at just the right time to keep you turning pages well-past your bedtime. I enjoyed the political aspects, because they give us insight into the world and add a sense of danger. Even the love triangle, though often referred to as overused in YA, is executed in exemplary fashion. It really could go any way, no matter whom Ariana professes to love, leaving this aspect of the story delightfully unpredictable.

On the downside, other things do happen as expected, as hinted in the previous book and this one. Additionally, some of the major reveals kind of left me wondering why I should care. Unfortunately, I cannot give you more detail as that would involve revealing spoilers. There’s a bit more fiction-heavy science in this one, though that would probably only bug folks who focus on such things.

Overall, I loved this story for its quick pace, complex plot, and spot-on love triangle. Fans of YA science fiction/dystopian will likely love this story, and I have no trouble saying that I highly recommend this book and this series. I look forward to number 3.
