REVIEW by Jena: Reckoning (Night Huntress Prequel) by Jeaniene Frost (@Jeaniene_Frost)

In New Orleans, a pair of undead serial killers are about to turn Mardi Gras into a horror show–unless the immortal hitman Bones can hunt them down first. From Jeaniene Frost comes a thrilling prequel novella featuring characters from her New York Times bestselling Night Huntress series. Originally appeared in the anthology Unbound.

This is going to be a super-short review as this is a novella and I don’t want to give up any details that will blow the story line.  Short or not, there’s a great storyline to this one!

Bones, Bones, Bones….

If you are a fan of the Night Huntress series, you know who Bones is.  Crispin “Bones” Russell is the snarky, sarcastic, alpha male lead for the series and he’s pure perfection as far as bad-ass vampire characters goes.  He’s 100% lethal but with LOTS of personality.  His sense of humor and wit is off the charts!  And he’s the star of Reckoning!

Reckoning, being the Night Huntress series prequel, take place before book one of the series.  The ONLY suck factor in that is if you’re already a fan of the series, you already love Bones and Cat together.  Since he hasn’t met Cat yet in this installment, there’s obviously other women.  I found myself feeling like I was witnessing Bones cheat on Cat and had to remind myself that I’m the dumbass reading the prequel AFTER reading the whole series.

The mystery in Reckoning, although short, is not lacking by any means.  In true Jeaniene Frost fashion, the mystery is so well written that it’s not predictable at all.  Always big with the twists and turns, she has written a novella that is just as gripping as the rest of the series.

If you have NOT read this series, I would suggest starting with Reckoning!  This novella will give you a good picture of the way Bones works.  He’s a great example of how a character can be a good guy that happens to do bad things and Reckoning paints a great picture of that.  After Reckoning, read the rest of the series.  I swear on all that is holy and not, you will LOVE this series!

Overall, I am giving Reckoning 5 stars!  This one is a page burner!

  2. Oh, this prequel was awful. Umm, in a good way, I mean. I loved Bones there. But who doesn’t love Bones? (Except for maybe Vlad fans or Mencheres fans, or … fans of any other sexy male in the series, lol).
The awful part is the ending. It’s sooo. I don’t know how to put it exactly in words. But what happens in the end is both so awful and so full of feels is tuck with me for while after finishing. Just couldn’t shake off the imagery of it, especially because for some reason I though of how that would be.
Despite the ‘awfulness’ overall it was pretty good.
I also read it after reading other books in the series (almost all of the others, I think :D). Seeing Bones not with Cat was definitely weird.
